Now Is The Time For Digital Marketing To Embrace Scarcity

What is scarcity, and why does it matter, anyway? It’s how Uber gets you to pay more for a car in a rainstorm when everyone else in the city is trying to stay dry. It’s the last slice of pizza in the box when you and your friends are still hungry. It’s the last cold beer on a hot, sunny day.And how much would you pay for those things? That’s right… You’d pay whatever it costs to get them.In life, scarcity is more common than abundance. Sometimes it is artificial; sometimes there are only a few items left, and sometimes you may get really concerned about missing out or losing an opportunity. Scarcity in the face of demand is what creates the market and defines price pressure.During our company’s (614 Group’s) Brand Safety Summit, I delivered an opening call to action to the industry. I told a story about a remark that CBS CEO Leslie Moonves made during his Q3 earnings call.He said, “In our broadcast TV group, stuff is flying off the shelf. Our sales guys are killing it, and you better co…

Google Files Patent To Replace Social Media Marketers

Google is playing the social card–again. The company was just issued a patent yesterday that hints at a system that will keep it relevant within the social game, this time, in assessing trends that will help users, companies, and brands tailor their social media posts according to copy that often resonates to drive engagement across social media shares. The proposed system is built on email communication, and the idea is quite simple: a link is shared from one user to another. When the link is clicked, Google will utilize a pop-up system that will suggest how to share the link on social media. To this end, Google understands that email is just one way of communicating, but wider distribution is required for “sharing links and for engaging in a conversation,” the patent says. The patent also suggests that Google will be identifying content within the email to propose different topics/copy that the user will be able to post. For example, the image above is a link sharing a new book. Three…

Industry Reactions To IAB Uninviting AdBlock Plus To Leadership Summit

A few months after the Interactive Advertising Bureau announced it’s LEAN Ads initiative to address ad blocking, AdBlock Plus says it’s invitation to the trade group’s annual Leadership Conference going on in Palm Desert, California this week was revoked at the last minute. In a blog post published Friday, AdBlock Plus (ABP) showed correspondence in which an IAB representative wrote a one sentence email stating, “We are returning your registration fee and cancelling your registrations for the IAB Annual Leadership Meeting.”Ben Williams, ABP operations and marketing manager, responded to the IAB’s decision in the blog post, “The over 400,000,000 downloads of Adblock Plus are not going to ‘go away.’ Dis-allowing Adblock Plus from attending your event solves nothing. We will proceed to work with others to build a sustainable monetization model for the Internet.”The IAB’s US spokesperson, Laura Goldberg, issued a statement, “The IAB Annual Leadership Meeting is for serious conversation amo…

What The 2015 Holiday Season’s 3 Biggest E-Commerce Surprises Mean For Marketers In 2016

For many marketers, the beginning of a new calendar year means the annual holiday marketing push has come to a close. It’s a welcome relief after months of hectic planning and last-minute campaigns, offering a chance to reflect on the previous year and reset for an exciting one ahead. But as we know, there is no hitting the brakes in the world of marketing — there are always reports to compile, meetings to schedule and plans to make.Keeping this in mind, the beginning of the year is an important time for marketers to learn from the recent months past. This holds especially true for e-commerce marketers, as we found that the past holiday season (November through December 2015) saw US e-commerce revenue grow 12.1 percent over the same period in 2014.Here are three e-commerce surprises from the 2015 holiday shopping season and what they mean for marketers in 2016. (Note: The stats below come from the Custora E-Commerce Pulse, a tool that tracks real-time online transactions from more than…

SMS Marketing: An Often Forgotten Goldmine In A Good Mobile Strategy

There are a lot of digital marketing channels. Most of our time and effort is spent on the most visible channels: search ads, display ads, SEO, social, email and content. While these are definitely key strategies that deserve a lot of attention, it can sometimes mean that other smaller, but equally powerful channels fall to the wayside. One of these oft-missed channels is something that potential customers (and probably everyone you know) use every day: SMS.Think about it: You send at least a couple of texts each day. Even with competition from chatting apps like Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp and WeChat, people worldwide still send 350 billion text messages per month. Why? Because SMS is available on virtually every cell phone, whereas other apps face problems with platform compatibility and internet access. For the right business, SMS can be an untapped fountain of prime opportunities. Here are five reasons to optimize your marketing with SMS:1. SMS Is Permission-BasedSM…

Data Security And Privacy: Marketing’s Top Conundrum In 2016

Forecasting the top tech trends has become a New Year’s rite of passage, but there’s no mystery about what will be one of the most compelling changes to hit marketers in 2016.This will be the year that enterprises undertake significant initiatives to secure data and ensure user privacy, particularly as the European Union looks to impose draconian penalties for companies failing to do so for EU citizens and residents.Digital marketers in the US have tended to put data privacy in the back seat, unlike in Europe, where users’ right to anonymity enables them to explicitly opt out of leaving information identifying them on website visits. But that’s changing, and US marketers know this. In the final months of 2016, the stakes for US marketers doing cross-border business grew astronomically. The first big news to hit came from the European Court of Justice, which struck down the 15-year-old Safe Harbor Act. That act had allowed more than 4,000 global businesses, including companies like Goog…

How to plan and create evergreen content

Last week I looked at the potential of evergreen content for SEO purposes, showing how it can work over time. This time I’ll look at how to plan and create content like this, where to find ideas, and the different formats you can use.Planning and idea generationIdeas for content come from a range of sources, but here a few places to look for inspiration…Matching your product to the contentPart of the challenge around evergreen is the nature of the product or service you’re looking to draw attention to.For Search Engine Watch this isn’t too tricky. We’re about providing advice and insight into (primarily) search marketing, so that’s what we do.However, it isn’t so easy for some businesses. Exciting brands like Lego can create (or get their fans to create) content easily thanks to the product. But what if you’re selling pest control solutions, or insurance? The deBugged blog from pest control firm Ehrlich is one example. Content such as guides to termites is evergreen, while there’s also …

First Impressions: LeEco Le Max – Unapologetically Big!

LeEco’s expansion train has finally made a move outside of China and its first destination is India. And the first phone to launch here is the Le Max. LeEco (previously known as LeTV) is known to dream big, and no wonder its first phone to launch in India is the super big, Le Max. We have seen companies trying to explore the extreme side of phablets, going above the popular 5.5-inch display to 5.7-inch and even 6-inch screens. The Le Max is beyond them all and has to be the biggest flagship smartphone in the market today. The Le Max carries forward LeEco’s design language, albeit bigger in every way. The 6.33-inch display is a Quad HD (2k) IPS LCD screen with a pixel density of 466 PPI. The moment you see the phone, you’d notice is the ultra thin bezels on either sides, something similar to the one we saw on the Qiku Q Terra. Despite the edge-to-edge display, the Le Max is BIG, and it isn’t pretending to be a smaller device than what it is. At 167.10mm, it is 8mm longer than the Nexus …

Which UK domains gained the highest increase in Google visibility?

In a topsy-turvy year for SEM that saw ‘mobilegeddon’, the rise of machine learning, a shift towards the user experience and the dominance of the Knowledge Graph, let’s see who the eventual winners were in 2015.IndexWatch has just published its annual visibility index showing which domains were the most successful in riding out the various algorithm storms. Here are the top five:1) Quora.comGiving Google itself a run for its money in terms of being able to answer all of your vital (and not so vital) questions is the crowd-sourced Q&A site Quora.According to IndexWatch, Quora’s URLs are most impressive and can rank for almost 100 top keywords on Google.2) Wilko.comThe hardware chain where you can go by a hammer-drill, a packet of screws, some washing up liquid and a panettone is apparently the top domain on the list to benefit from Google’s Phantom update. The Phantom update was a term given to an acknowledged update to Google’s core algorithm around 5 March last year that saw many w…

Google doubles down on Product Listings Ads with expandable mega layout

Our eagle-eyed friends over at ChannelAdviser spotted a test that Google is conducting, which allows the user to expand the PLAs shown for any given search query. The new interface includes an arrow icon in the bottom right corner of the product display panel. Click on it and the amount of listings shown will at least double. Here’s what it looks like:If this test is rolled out as a new feature, then it will result in a lot of organic and paid text ads being edged out of the picture, with PLAs almost completely taking over the top of the page.At any rate, it is clear that this should increase search marketers’ focus on optimising PLAs, as the other listing types will have been usurped. As one of up to 16 ads being shown, this is potentially great news for brands that aren’t chasing – or able to attain – the very top listings. Ads beyond ninth place, that would otherwise not be shown, will now feature prominently at the top of the search results. Win.That being said, it will be harder to …

The phone also boasts of a peak brightness of 500 nits and the front camera comes with a 85-degree wide angled sensor that can accommodate more people in the frame.LeEco Le 1s looks great design wise thanks to the neatly chamfered edges and the compact metal frame. LeEco Le Max Launched in India at Rs 32,999 for 64GB Version

As expected LeEco has made an entry into the Indian market with the Le Max smartphone. Unlike many of the other smartphones being flooded in the market Le Max is a top of the line phone packed to the brim with class leading hardware. Earlier known as LeTv the company was treated to a rebranding after which it became the LeEco. The LeMax is in fact the last year’s flagship from the company and was exhibited at the CES 2015.Le Max boasts of a gigantic 6.33-inch QHD display offering a pixel density of 464ppi. The phone draws its power from the octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor clocked at 2.0GHz and paired with a 4GB of RAM. On the storage front the Le Max will offer a 64GB of Internal memory but the company has ditched the microSD card slot. Thankfully Le Max will also be available in a 128GB variant in case the 64GB is not enough. The Imaging department seems to be well taken care of by the 21-Megapixel Sony IMX230 sensor along with a dual LED flash and a 4-Megapixel front facing camera…

This move comes at a time the industry is struggling to keep its growth positive and is trying out new verticals.Vineet Taneja had joined Micromax in July 2014 and he came with a strong experience in the telecom sector including heading Nokia, Bharti Airtel. Micromax is facing a crisis in senior management level as many of the officials are resigning from the company. Ad Exchange bRealTime Launches Biddr+ for Header Bidding

bRealTime, a programmatic ad exchange for publishers, is today launching a header bidding service called Biddr+ to help manage multiple ad buyers.Header bidding is a way for websites to directly take bids from a number of advertisers simultaneously, without having to offer it first to one buyer and then, if no sale is made, to another.Such “waterfall” bidding can mean the website doesn’t realize the actual value of the available space, because the space is sold without all potential buyers having a shot.In header bidding, a small JavaScript tag in the site’s page header calls the bidding or demand source, like an ad network or exchange. But, as bRealTime general manager Brian Weigel pointed out, you need a tag for each demand source. The more tags you have, each calling for a bid, the greater the likelihood that the page load will be delayed.“There are only so many header scripts you can add” before latency kicks in, he said. This latency is bad news for publishers, who are already batt…
