Data-Led Inbound Marketing, Part 2

This is a follow-up to my post at the end of 2015, which looked at how you can take third-party tools and merge their data to create weighted segment reports that allow you to better target inbound link building campaigns. This time, I’d like to focus on quantifying actions and impact so you can build data-led inbound strategies from the ground up.I’ll share the outputs of that analysis, using our surfing key phrase sets to show the types of inbound content triggered by the analysis. And I’ll discuss how to embed them into a broader campaign planner to provide a performance-driven SEO planner you and your team can work through.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

Jump-Start Your SEO With These 6 Surefire Tactics

I’m often asked the question, “Where do I start with SEO?” Though there is no one-size-fits-all approach, my answer is generally to find the biggest need for your site and start chipping away at it.It’s kind of like paying off your credit card bills. Pay the one with the highest interest rate first so you’re spending less on interest and more on paying down your debt. (Or pay the lowest balance off first.)Here, I want to focus on what those biggest needs really are. Of course, since I haven’t seen your website, I don’t know what your particular biggest need is, but I’ve outlined a handful below that are typical of many sites looking to jump into SEO.If you’re engaging in SEO, whether internally or with a contractor or agency, take a look at these six areas to find out if they are a concern for you. If they are, they represent a great place to jump-start your web marketing efforts.1. Optimize Your TagsA lot of SEOs focus their efforts around keyword research. This research is the basis…

How Do You Actually “Think Outside The Box” In Digital Marketing?

As marketers, I’m sure we’ve all heard sayings that are meant to challenge our line of thinking and productivity. You may be asked to “think outside the box” or be told that the six words that will kill your business are “We’ve always done it this way.”Though these sentiments are meant to challenge employees, they foster the notion that your thinking must be grand in scale and allow for widespread changes.Don’t get me wrong — there’s nothing wrong with thinking big. However, neglecting smaller, more frequent changes in the name of scale can be damaging.Thinking outside the box doesn’t need to apply to one item or task. It can and should be a mentality that you employ on a daily basis. You should always be thinking about how you could improve your workflow and the deliverables you present.Applying This MentalityLet’s look at reporting as an example of thinking differently by making minor, but impactful, updates. Most reports I review are stagnant month over month. The tables and graphs …

Twitter’s New Timeline Algorithm is Now Rolling Out

After a controversial debate and years of testing, Twitter, the social network that was in news for all the wrong reasons a couple of days back is finally rolling out its new timeline algorithm aimed to increase user engagement. The new feature, live on Twitter’s mobile app and the web, will rank tweets based on popularity, timeliness and how often a user engages with it. The new formula is mostly based upon Twitter’s “while you were away” feature that has been around for a while and apparently, the social media giant has decided to keep it at least for now.The company on its blog mentioned that when a user refreshes his/her Twitter feed after some time, tweets which are ranked on top by the algorithm will appear on top in reverse-chronological order. Though, the ones that aren’t yet analysed will show up underneath as usual. It looks like right now that Twitter is currently keeping this in beta by not enabling it automatically.Users will have to turn it on manually from the settings,…

Pay Attention! 3 Steps To Digital Advertising Breakthrough

“Look at me, Judy,” I blurted out with exasperation at my 13-year-old daughter, trying to get her undivided attention. It was nearing 10 p.m. on a school night, and I was beginning to panic. That day, Judy had uncharacteristically asked me for help with her homework rather than her mother, who thankfully plays the tutor role, as I am usually at work or traveling during the appointed hours.I said yes, of course, partially out of parental duty, but also with the notion that it would take 20 minutes at most to guide her through a difficult patch. Two hours later, I realized that the rules of engagement had changed since I was a child, and even since my 21-year-old son was in the eighth grade!Judy “doing homework” In addition to her homework assignment, I was vying for her attention, along with three other content streams: Snapchat (via tablet), Pandora (via phone) and the good old web to look things up (via a laptop).Ironically, this took place while I was writing my last article, “The Defi…

Report: Established App Markets Transitioning Away From Download Revenue And Toward Usage

App Annie, herself (from the website) The first forecast report from app analytics firm App Annie finds that app store revenue from downloads is moving into the rearview mirror for mature markets like the U.S.According to App Annie’s “Mobile App Forecast: The Path to $100 Billion,” released today, the U.S. and other developed markets will see revenue from usage exceeding revenue from downloads in the next few years. In this “App Market Maturity Model,” the report describes the initial adoption of mobile devices as “the golden age of app store downloads,” during which users have not yet established app usage patterns. The cycle began in developed markets more or less when app stores did, about 2008.After a while, “app habits” develop as users focus on a few of their downloaded apps, and begin to spend money on in-app premium features, like virtual goods or subscriptions. In other words, falling app downloads should be accompanied by increases in revenues from usage, advertising, and servi…

What Twitter’s New Timeline Means For Brands And Advertisers

Copyright Aaron Durand (@everydaydude) for Twitter, Inc. Twitter’s new algorithmic timeline became available globally on Wednesday. Twitter has been the place where brands can connect with users in the moment. What happens when the top of users’ timeline isn’t completely live anymore? If you’re not familiar yet with all the details of the new timeline, see our FAQ: All About How Twitter’s New Timeline Works. For Twitter, the new, optional timeline is as much about the brands trying to connect with users as it is about the users themselves. The new timeline puts top Tweets that users missed from accounts they follow at the top of the timeline. This includes top organic Tweets from brand accounts.“We’ve noticed in our early experiments that people who have this experience turned on Tweet and Retweet more on Twitter — and we believe this means that brands can reach a more engaged potential audience,” Twitter explains in the blog post announcement. “Throughout our tests, we also saw an incre…

Twitter Launches New Timeline Featuring Top Past Tweets

rvlsoft / Shutterstock.com Twitter launched its hotly rumored new timeline on Wednesday that has had users nervous that live Twitter will become a thing of the past. With the new timeline “We want to make it even easier and faster for people to discover and catch up on what’s happening right now,” Twitter announced in a blog post today.Users will be prompted to opt-in to the new timeline, which is purely optional at this point. A selection of past Tweets from accounts users follow will appear at the top of the timeline, followed by the traditional chronologically-ordered live Tweet stream. Live Twitter will still exist, and Twitter old Marketing Land, the past Tweets will be “recent and relevant”.“We’ve improved the timeline by analyzing how millions of people engage with billions of Tweets — and we’re using this information to determine the best content to surface. We use a person’s past Twitter activity to predict which Tweets they might like to see most.”The company says it has seen …

Voice search: the death of the keyboard?

Once upon a time, search engines took marketers by storm, as many of the top brands struggled to stay ahead of the digital world, first came search engines, then came social media, now we have a mobile and voice search experience. As of 2014 we know 55% of teens and 41% of adults use voice search on a daily basis. Now with virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa and voice recognition technology from Shazam and SoundHound, the number of users adopting voice search is only increasing, and the technology for understanding humans is advancing as well. What is Voice Search? Before we get too deep into the implications of voice search, let’s go through a quick run through on what it is and how it works.Google’s Voice Search uses a combination of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) to understand a user’s voice search request. This is then processed in a powerful database which aims to match the question with an answer which is then returned to the user, rather than a list of …

Finally! Brands Can Edit Their Knowledge Graph Cards In Google

The day is finally upon us. A new update to Google’s Knowledge Graph will give users and brands (some) control of the rich information displayed in alongside the search results. Google’s Knowledge Graph is typically rich data displayed on a query typically displayed to the right of the search results and acts to provide succinct information on a brand. Well, “official representatives” will now have the ability to make changes and updates as they (and Google) see fit.The change is neither immediate nor unregulated, but this is major progress for helping users and companies display accurate information. This is a big deal for brands and companies who are looking to easily control the information around their results. Not only are these changes now possible, but even a quick update (such as a phone number change, CEO change, location change, ect) to the official brand information would be a breeze. This is the first time that Google has opened up Knowledge Graph data to be improved upon by…

Ad viewability “should not be a KPI”, according to study

A large study of almost 10,000 people found that ad viewability affects ad recall, but goes on to state that it should not be a KPI.The research, compiled by IPG Media Lab, Integral Ad Science and Cadreon, sought to explore whether ‘viewable’ ads are actually effective. The viewability problem is considerable, with more than half of all ads not being seen by humans. But how effective are those ads that are seen? Also, how do ads perform relative to the industry standards? How is ‘viewable’ defined?According to the Media Ratings Council (MRC) a banner ad is considered viewable if it is at least 50% in view for at least one second.A rich media ad only needs to be 30% in view for the same duration, whereas a video ad must be 50% in view for a minimum of two consecutive seconds.IPG Media Lab said it did not set out to recommend changes to the MRC standards, nor to develop a new standard. However it found that ads that exceed the MRC standard have 16% recall as opposed to ads that meet the sta…

Opera, the good old browser company from Norway has reportedly been offered $1.2-Billion buyout by a consortium of Chinese Internet firms. The company made this announcement just today. The consortium will be led by Kunlan and Qihoo 360 (the guys behind Qiku), and will receive backing from Golden Brick and Yonglian. This is what Opera CEO Lars Boilesen had to say “There is strong strategic and industrial logic to the acquisition of Opera by the consortium,” he further added that “The consortium’s ownership will strengthen Opera’s position to serve our users and partners with even greater innovation, and to accelerate our plans of expansion and growth.”Opera had teamed up with Morgan Stanley International and ABG Sundal Collier, and went for a buyer lookout in August last year. This move was propelled by the fact that Opera had hit a low note with the earnings after losing out substantially on the market share and eventually the advertising revenue.Yahun Zhou speaking for the consortium…
