MWC 2016: That “Is there no one” Feeling…

In one of the most famous scenes in the film Troy, Brad Pitt, who portrays legendary Greek warrior Achilles, walks over to the enemy lines after slaying their champion, and screams “Is there no one?“, throwing down a challenge to anyone who dares cross swords (or lances) with him. As the curtains came down on the 2016 edition of the Mobile World Congress, I was sore tempted to do the same, minus the helmet, armour and other Greek-warrior-in-Troy paraphernalia. For, not withstanding all the high profile launches and discussions, the milling crowds, the rave reviews and punditry, the biggest feeling that MWC left me with this year was one of…well, for want of a better word, emptiness.By emptiness, I hasten to add, I don’t mean absence of products or technology. No, those twins were in abundant evidence during the event. There were so many products launched and so many technologies showcased that I wager those who were in the hallowed halls of the event were royally tired at the end of i…

First Impressions: Samsung Galaxy A7 and Galaxy A5

Samsung introduced the A series sometime back and this was all about bringing phones that have a look and feel similar to their flagship devices but slightly underpowered when it came to specs – essentially a step below the flagship Galaxy S series. They have done pretty well at that. Few weeks ago an upgraded version of last year’s A7 and A5 were launched in China, and Samsung has been quick enough to bring it to India. This will basically fill up the shortcoming that the original A7 had to make it more desirable and powerful. The Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 are so similar in their looks and design, we thought it’d make more sense to club them together in our first impressions today. The instant you look at the devices, you will know these two are premium smartphones. Edges chamfered on both the sides give them a nice appeal and the shine is so subtle that it brings in lots of elegance to the looks, something that is very important in phones that want to come off as premium. The antenna ba…

News360 Launches Free Audience Analytics Tool For Publishers And Content Marketers

News discovery platform News360 is launching this week a free, cloud-based audience analytics platform for publishers and content marketers.Called NativeAI, it employs machine learning — doesn’t everyone these days? — to track which topics create the most engagement for individual readers on apps and websites, as measured by page views, time on page, and similar metrics. The new analytics tool is similar to what News360 has used internally for its app and site, for which it claims about six million users. But, co-founder and CEO Roman Karachinsky told me, it has been completely rebuilt for the needs of external customers, such as the more specific content scope of a niche site. NativeAI’s reports can be used by publishers to guide their content toward the subjects with the greatest response. It can also help them determine what kinds of content-related ads would best match up.For marketers, Karachinsky said, such analysis can help brands determine the most engaging subjects for their co…

Amazon To Webstore Sellers: No New Orders As Of May 1st, Two Months Ahead Of Platform Closure

Amazon Webstore sellers that are still going through migrations to a new platform just got a new deadline.Last March, Amazon announced it would be shuttering the Webstore e-commerce platform effective July 1, 2016. However, sellers were notified Thursday in an email from the company that order processing on Webstore properties would cease on May 1, 2016, bumping up the deadline to migrate to another service by 60 days.Sellers will still be able to manage returns and refunds on Webstore up until July 1, but without being able to accept orders, a site is essentially out of business. The announcement will likely have the biggest impact on those sellers that are in the midst of transitioning to platforms other than Shopify, with which Amazon established a direct migration.Below is a copy of the email sent to Webstore sellers on Thursday, February 25, 2016:

How Much A Snapchat Geofilter Costs At The Oscars & 5 Other Big Events

Brands can buy a Snapchat geofilter to put around the White House on Super Tuesday. Earlier this week Snapchat made it possible for anyone to pay to offer images that the mobile app’s users can include in the photos or videos they post to Snapchat when they’re in a predefined location. These on-demand geofilters are primarily intended for normal people and small businesses. Someone could buy one as a fun gag for their wedding or birthday party. And a business like a local pet store could put one around their store or a nearby dog park. But these geofilters can also be a way for brands to get in front of a lot of people attending major live events, such as the Academy Awards or tech festival South by Southwest. Below are some examples of places that marketers can run geofilters around during some of this month’s and next month’s biggest events and how much those campaigns would cost.Snapchat’s tool for buying geofilters only offers dates until the end of March, so Marketing Land wasn’t a…
