Twitter’s User Growth Stalled And Advertisers Don’t Care (Yet)

After Twitter reported stagnant user growth in the fourth quarter — with a decline in US users and an overall global bump of just 3 percent year-over-year — share prices started sinking and the doomsday press coverage churned. In all of this a revenue story that might otherwise read as promising, if not meteoric, gets drowned out by stories of executive departures, a product that’s too complicated and riddled with bots, and endless comparisons to Facebook. There is in fact a pretty solid revenue growth story, but even that gets drowned out by comparisons to Facebook’s meteoric success. But remember those years before Facebook figured out mobile advertising? Ad product changes and inconsistent communication to advertisers led many to have serious doubts the company could make the transition. Then they figured it out. Whereas, Facebook’s product was strong and attracted droves of users, it was having trouble monetizing those users. Twitter on the other hand has had a turbulent product hi…

Achieving Hyper-Segmentation To Reach Personalization At Scale

With the rising adoption of machine learning and automation, a human touch becomes more important than ever. Companies that have figured out how to utilize data to create deeper personalization are not only improving the overall customer experience by talking in a language customers appreciate; they’re also winning more deals and generating more revenue dollars. So why aren’t more businesses taking this approach? The unfortunate truth is that too many marketing and sales teams are lost in the weeds, trying to navigate a fragmented technology landscape with thin or noisy data. Marketing may keep information about website clicks in Marketo, while sales development reps track their own set of prospect activity in separate tools like Outreach or Tout.Overwhelmed by the complexity of disparate systems, employees will too often ignore critical components of customer data altogether. With a lack of understanding or alignment about what makes a prospect a good fit to buy their company’s product…

Immersion is the next big milestone in consumer technology. Armed with an expanding range of virtual reality (VR) technologies, consumers are poised to consume content not as spectators, but as participants in a three-dimensional, 360-degree virtual universe. But if you think the practical applications of immersive VR experiences are limited to movies and video games, you couldn’t be more wrong. The newly widespread availability of VR technology and the ubiquity of mobile have made VR immersion a prime target for email marketers.VR Tech: The Future Is NowIn March 2014, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made waves when he announced that his company had acquired Oculus VR, one of the leading manufacturers of virtual reality technologies like the Oculus Rift headset. But the announcement wasn’t a surprise to those familiar with the consumer technology marketplace. Going over to the duck side: a week with DuckDuckGo

I’ve heard about DuckDuckGo a few times over the years, mostly as a name uttered in hushed whispers behind closed doors – “You don’t have to use Google. There is another way.”As far as I knew, it was a small, scrappy start-up that had nevertheless managed to make its mark in the world of search, dominated as it is by the vast and all-knowing Google.Going over to the duck side…
Image by JD Hancock, some rights reserved. Frustration with Google might be at a high at the moment with tax-dodging, increasing dominance of search (and now the mobile web) and removing ads on the right hand side at the expense of organic search results. Therefore I was intrigued by the comments from DuckDuckGo fans on Jason Tabeling’s article on whether you should be paying more attention to DuckDuckGo, urging people to switch to DuckDuckGo and discover the ‘real internet’. How would searches from such a small engine stack up against Google’s, in everyday situations? Would using DuckDuckGo be an exercise in frust…

The Internet of (Too Many) Things: Is There a Lack of Balance?

Be it at events such as the Consumer Electronics Show, or trends coming in from global OEMs, one thing is for certain: The IoT is definitely IN. The Internet of Things is turning out to be a fast paced movement which aspires to connect a multitude of devices to the internet – and not just smartphones or laptops, but also consumer electronics such as televisions and even refrigerators and washing machines. Ambitious, and truly revolutionary to say the least. But let’s look beyond the buzzwords and hashtags for a bit, and focus on the underlying state of affairs as they truly are. The Internet of Things as perceived right now is straying off its intended path and becoming more of a novelty rather than a necessity, and in this piece I talk about the current ramifications of IoT and how they can be corrected.Hold Your HorsesBefore you all come at me with angry glares, flaming torches and rusted pitchforks, I’d like to make my stance clear: I’m completely in favor of the IoT movement. I bel…

Startup Mariana Launches B2B Lead Gen Platform That Automatically Creates Personas

Credit: Mariana A variety of B2B predictive lead scoring firms can find and rate companies according to how likely they’ll become your customer. But startup Mariana is today launching its platform so that marketers can also more accurately find the decision-makers within those companies. The Palo Alto, California-based company, founded in 2013, is also announcing $2 million in seed funding.First, the platform analyzes a client firm’s existing database of potential company targets to pinpoint the most promising possibilities. Then it goes to work finding the decision-making individuals at each targeted company.“Our special sauce,” CEO and co-founder Venkat Nagaswamy told me, “is that we automatically create persona.”Nagaswamy said that other lead scoring companies choose those individuals mostly on the basis of their titles, which can be misleading.By contrast, he said, Mariana utilizes neural net-powered deep learning to create the personas expected within those companies. Data sources …
