Video ads are coming to Pinterest

Your Pinterest experience is about to get richer and more interactive–with video ads, that is. Video ads has been a consideration for the company for almost a year, with the launch of Cinematic Pins in May of 2015. Digiday reports that a small group of users are being given the ability to test video ads on the image sharing platform. The company is also testing the video ad product internally.Sources are saying that the videos autoplay when a user stops scrolling over them. Additionally, the ideal video length is still being determined. The video ads will not replace Cinematic Pins and is meant to complement them, the Digiday report states.Video has been gaining tremendous momentum, with Facebook seeing 100 million hours of video watched a day, and many brands and publishers have been capitalizing on this as well. Pinterest is definitely in a solid position to attract advertisers with its inclusion of video ads to its paid media activations.

Google ch-ch-ch-changes. How they’re affecting publishers and SEOs

GongTo / Shutterstock.com There appears to be a trend in Google’s actions towards publishers and the digital marketing industry that has me a bit concerned. It seems the company has become less and less transparent with publishers over the last couple years — and frankly, it has me a bit uneasy.Google transparencyNow, there have always been bones of contention between Google and the SEO community; some believe that Google hates SEOs, while others believe that Google actually needs us.I was always in the camp that thought Google knew they needed the SEO community because they cannot control the end product. No matter how great the search results, the end product is still the website. If the websites returned by Google are not very usable or relevant, then people won’t use Google to find them. This has made the SEO industry an almost necessary go-between, giving Google a fairly direct method to affect site quality by getting SEOs to communicate their rules to publishers. However, in light …

Why real-time search algorithm updates may be bad news

Every update of Panda and Penguin in recent years has brought joy to some SEOs and sorrow to others. As the algorithms become real-time, the job of an SEO will become harder, and I wonder if Google has really thought of the consequences of these updates. So, what potential issues may arise as a result of faster algorithm updates?Troubleshooting algorithmic penaltiesAlgorithmic penalties are a lot more difficult to troubleshoot than manual actions. With a manual action, Google informs you of the penalty via the Google Search Console, giving webmasters the ability to address the issues that are negatively impacting their sites. With an algorithmic penalty, they may not even be aware that a problem exists. The easiest way to determine if your website has suffered from an algorithmic penalty is to match a drop in your traffic with the dates of known algorithm updates.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

New Leak Says that iPhone SE will Borrow Heavily from 5S Design and Feature a 12 MP Camera

As official launch date closes by, we’re getting several reports revealing almost everything about the much awaited, iPhone SE that is going to be unveiled on this month’s 21st. A fresh new leak is making rounds claiming that the upcoming iPhone will be a “heavily upgraded” 5S rather than a “6S mini”, with a much more refined build. The iPhone SE will look almost alike the 5S suggesting a much boxier aesthetic instead of curved looks with rounded volume buttons and power button on the top. It will flaunt a metal back rounded off with glass on both sides. We’ve seen numerous images before that showcases a more curved design, as a result, nothing can be said for certain as of now. The Edges on SE will be a lot less shiny with matte finishes providing a much cleaner outline and less susceptible to scratches. The source also reported that Apple has packed some impressive hardware including the A9 processor, NFC for Apple Pay and surprisingly, an M9 chip for the always-on “Hey Siri” feature.…

The inbox laboratory: How email can thrive on empirical experimentation

At first glance, Facebook’s new reaction emoji might look just whimsical or downright silly. It seems like a step too far to ask users to go beyond tagging “Likes” into rendering judgments about whether they love a post, find it funny or are actually angered by it.But there’s genius behind how Facebook is rolling out its new reactions emoji feature to subscribers. Facebook is famous — or infamous — for going to extraordinary lengths to capture finely grained user interaction data as a means for fine-tuning the algorithm that’s shaping each user’s feed.Digging deeper for dataThe new emoji are more than an enhancement that provides users with a way to post more nuanced, emotional responses: They’re one more tool that Facebook has added to its collection for optimizing the user experience by gathering data on how people engage and respond to content.Think about it: Atop the existing layers of personal data — about buying preferences, political affiliations or other segmentation metrics —…

A CMO’s View: How IDG rebranded 100+ media properties

©IDG Communications, Inc. Photo contributed by Matthew Mikaelian. Last year, Josh London was named IDG’s first CMO. His inaugural task: overseeing a company-wide rebrand that would impact IDG’s complete portfolio of websites, publications and events.London says he has spent the last year establishing a team, performing comprehensive research, and building a foundation to support IDG’s first company-wide branding campaign.“IDG has historically marketed itself through its powerful global brands, including CIO, Computerworld, Macworld and PCWorld,” says London, “That meant that our customers and audiences often only knew us in one context. We’re moving to a master brand strategy, so our new brand architecture will reflect that across all of our properties.”According to London, the move was motivated by two specific reasons: to better communicate IDG’s offerings and build greater awareness around its full collection of individual brands.“We know that the new brand voice enables us to bette…

How do you retain clients? Retain your staff.

As a client services professional, I spend time thinking about client relationships and the significance of retention. Questions like, “How are we, as a business, developing our clients to ensure they’ll stay with us?” come to mind. And thinking about these questions and relationships has taught me to evaluate and understand the dynamic between the account representatives and clients.Account representatives are more than the face of your business — they also perform and are viewed as an extension of a client’s team.In fact, in recent years, many client satisfaction conversations have shifted to focus on client-facing employees, with companies asking questions such as, “How are we, as a business, developing our employees to ensure they’ll stay with us?”Leadership looking to retain clients will start from the core, within their own team. To keep employees on board, there are five things every leader should do.Personalize leadershipPersonalization is an increasingly hot topic in ad tech …

CMOs flex IT purchasing muscle, but is that a good thing?

There’s been a lot of buzz about the rapidly expanding IT spending power of marketing departments, and specifically, chief marketing officers. Much of this comes from an increasingly prophetic Gartner prediction that by 2017, the CMO will be spending more on IT than the chief information officer. This has caused much hand-wringing and debate about the role and relevance of the CIO in a fast-paced digital world where cloud applications can be implemented without the assistance or even the knowledge of IT.With $3.5 trillion in IT spending predicted for 2015, much is at stake.Observers talk about a shift in roles and the necessity for IT to become more relevant in creating value. Backstopping this discussion is the reality that most technology acquisitions underperform — costing billions in wasted cash and opportunity. There’s no evidence suggesting that CMOs are making better IT decisions — they’re just making them more quickly. The business technology landscape is daunting — confusing eve…

Google Starts Testing Ads In Matched Content Recommendation Units

Last April, Google launched a content recommendation tool — in the vein of Taboola and Outbrain — for publishers using AdSense to add to their websites. Unlike those other services, Google’s Matched content featured had not included ads and has only functioned to cross-promote content on publishers’ own sites — until now. With a new beta, publishers can opt to feature promoted content from other sources by opting to “Allow ads” in a Matched content unit. Google explains in the Matched content support page:Please note that by opting in to this beta feature you agree to let Google try out different ad types and ad sizes in your Matched content unit. Google will only show ads when they’re likely to perform well and provide a good user experience.Above is an example from Google showing content “Promoted By” Zagat.com. The ads are styled to match that of the native content recommendations.Google also notes that the smaller units that only show one content recommendation will not show ads. H…

WhatsApp Now Gets Bold and Italics Text Formatting

WhatsApp has been bombarding us with new updates quite frequently and it was only a couple of days ago that they introduced the feature to share PDF documents. Now a new update has bought about a few changes to the font and the overall formatting in general. The changes have been baked in in the recent revisions but the version 2.12.539 has them all. In case you want to try out these features head over to this link and download the latest version. The revised formatting will now allow users to format the text within WhatsApp in bold or italics. WhatsApp has not included a separate key toggle to enable this feature instead it lets you do so by using symbols before and after the word. For italics you need to follow similar steps but instead of asterisks add underscore, _word_.Furthermore, the notifications …
