Kayak brings voice-enabled travel search to Amazon’s Echo device

Amazon Echo and voice assistant Alexa have now integrated voice-enabled travel search from Kayak. Users can search for rental car, hotel and flight information, including flight tracking. The capabilities are built on Kayak’s “Explore” and “Flight Tracker” features. However users are not able to book reservations after searching; for now it’s simply an informational and pricing tool. After enabling Kayak within the Alexa smartphone app, users invoke the tool by saying the keywords “Alexa, ask Kayak” or simply “Alexa, Kayak.” It’s then possible to ask a range of questions. Here are some examples:“How much does it cost to fly to New York?” (you can set a default airport).“Search for hotels in London”“I need a rental car in Detroit”If more information is required Alexa prompts you to provide it. Accordingly, you can have multi-step conversations with Alexa around travel information now.Yet the capabilities are very far from perfect. Alexa/Kayak often cannot answer many travel questions. Fo…

How to make SEO a company-wide habit

A few months ago, the Content Marketing Manager at a client’s organization reached out to me, asking if we could provide his copywriting team with an SEO training session.I was floored! We had been optimizing the majority of their content for years, but they had never shown any interest in doing it on their own.Why the sudden change? A new VP of marketing had come on board with search experience and wanted to make SEO a priority across the entire marketing department. After years of trying to get them engaged, all it took was a new person to come in and make it happen. And now, it’s become the norm for individuals within the department to consult us on SEO matters. Amazing!Coincidentally, this all occurred as I was reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, a book that looks at habits, how those habits are formed and how businesses have used the habits of their consumers to market to themIt got me thinking… How do we make SEO a company-wide habit within our organizations? After all,…

Instagram strips down its logo, apps because they weren’t simple enough already

Instagram redesigned its iconic logo. It’s a lot more colorful and pared down. It also redesigned its mobile apps. They’re a lot less colorful and pared down. Will this change whether you or 400 million other people continue to use Instagram? Probably not. Will this change how you use Instagram? Probably not.The redesign doesn’t change anything about how Instagram’s apps actually work, just how they look. Instagram’s head of design, Ian Spalter, said in a Medium post about the redesign that the new look is supposed to make the photos and videos people check out on Instagram even more of the focus. Apparently that content wasn’t “center stage” enough already.

Here’s what Amazon wants to accomplish with its new Video Direct service

Amazon is now making its video service more like its general marketplace. On Tuesday, the e-commerce giant announced a new service, called Amazon Video Direct (AVD). While it allows any video creator to upload work and receive payment in several ways, it’s clearly directed at video professionals — which it describes as “creators and storytellers” — and not at your brother’s collection of adorable videoclips of your new niece. In other words, professional video makers can now choose to sell their works on Amazon without waiting to be selected by their programming staff, just as you might sell, say, your company’s line of candy through the Amazon marketplace. The company noted that its launch partners include Conde Nast Entertainment, HowStuffWorks, Samuel Goldwyn Films, Mashable, Machinima, and Pro Guitar Lessons. The video maker will have several possible revenue-making options. Works uploaded to AVD can be included in Amazon’s Prime Video service, for instance, and thus made available to…

Google Translate adds new “Tap to Translate” feature for third party apps

Google Translate has added some new features and capabilities. These include third party app integration, improved and expanded offline mode and visual (Word Lens) translation for Chinese languages. The primary new feature, called “Tap to Translate,” avoids the need to copy text from one app or page and paste it into Google Translate to determine meaning. Now that can be accomplished without switching apps.Users must have the latest version of Google Translate installed. They then select/copy the desired text and a Google Translate window pops up in the current app enabling translation. The .gif (and video) below shows how it works. This capability also works offline when there’s no connection. Offline mode is now also available for iOS devices. The total number of languages available to Google Translate is now 52. Google reports that there are more than 500 million Google Translate users, 90 percent of whom live outside the US.Google also added Chinese translation to its Word Lens “inst…

Beyond authority: guiding metrics for lasting links

I recently attended a search conference and had the opportunity to converse with attendees from a wide range of fields, with varying SEO backgrounds and experiences. After many interesting and engaging conversations, a common takeaway stood out to me:People are hung up on technical SEO metrics.I remember multiple questions like, “What’s your minimum threshold for Trust Flow?” or, “Okay, you get relevant links, but what is the average Domain Authority?”I shared my observation with our sales team when I returned, and they confirmed this was a common theme among their contacts. It seems my peers in the SEO industry have noticed this trend as well. While I do believe SEO metrics like Domain Authority or Trust Flow are important and useful, I also believe they require context — and there is more to the story when it comes to evaluating link prospects.Link acquisition is a nuanced, difficult practice, but I want to walk through my own perspective on the link metrics that lead to securing rea…

Convergence and the power of data in modern marketing

Scott Brinker’s 2016 Marketing Technology Landscape Supergraphic documents what many enterprise marketing teams deal with daily: The number of marketing technology vendors has doubled yet again since last year.Innovation comes from extraordinary creativity in our industry. It also has its negative side: the fragmentation caused by rapid proliferation of martech tools and the siloed data they generate. At the same time, several forces are converging to help unlock the power of data for marketing initiatives. How does convergence emerge from such diversity? The answer is multi-dimensional:First, and fundamentally, technology is converging. When you look at Brinker’s supergraphic, you see that the lines separating different technologies are starting to blur. It’s no longer clear which vendors are moving into what spaces and which technologies work better together. At the same time, data generated by these vendors is converging. The vendors represented in the martech universe are collecting …

Electioneering & email 2016: evolving voter engagement

Former Speaker of the House and veteran Boston politician Tip O’Neill famously said, “All politics is local.” Whether stumping for votes at the local union hall or country club or trudging door-to-door, every politician since Pericles has understood the importance of a hearty handshake and the chance to look the voter square in the eye.Email may not provide quite as face-to-face an encounter as running into Bill Clinton at the neighborhood Mickey D’s, but there’s an unqualified personal intimacy to our inbox. No wonder political operatives burn the midnight oil dreaming up new ways to wriggle their way into it.So, just as in other recent election years, the strategies and tactics they’re putting to use in 2016 offer fascinating comparisons — and useful insights — for the rest of us.Previous lessons of (email) leadershipRegardless of any email marketer’s party affiliation (or lack of it) or opinion of President Barack Obama’s performance in office, they’ve got to admit how his two pres…

Startup Zarget launches first browser plugin-based CRO tool

A heatmap using Zarget Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is the boring name for an essential task: figuring out what online tweaks will lead to more sales. This week, Walnut, California-based startup Zarget is launching what it says is a new approach to this necessary chore — the first browser plugin-based CRO tool. The company is also announcing it has raised $1.5 million in a seed fund round led by Accel Partners and Matrix Partners.Unlike other CRO tools that require the loading of a website into the application, CEO and co-founder Arvind Parthiban told me, Zarget provides A/B testing, heatmaps, and funnel analyses of a live site through a Chrome browser plugin that works on any platform. Like his two co-founders, Parthiban is a former employee of online office suite Zoho. This means that heatmaps, which visualize the most-clicked areas of a page (see image at top of this page), can be rendered in realtime, rather than on top of the screengrab that other tools present. Dynamic page e…

Twitter renewed its upfront deals with these three agencies

Twitter didn’t have a great first quarter. Its monthly audience grew but not by a lot. Its revenue grew but not by as much as Wall Street analysts had expected. And its brand advertising business didn’t grow by as much as Twitter itself had expected. But there was at least one bright spot.Twitter got three global agency holding companies to renew their upfront deals with the social network with a 40% increase year-over-year in money coming to Twitter from those deals. While Twitter mentioned those deals during its most recent earnings call, it hasn’t said which agency groups were the ones to re-up with the social network. But multiple people with knowledge of the renewals have told Marketing Land their names: Omnicom Media Group, Publicis Media (née Starcom MediaVest Group) and Dentsu Aegis Network.Spokespeople for Omnicom and Publicis Media confirmed the renewals but declined to comment on specifics. Spokespeople for Dentsu and Twitter declined to comment. Each of the three agency net…
