[WATCH] ML Live #14: Google Home vs. Amazon Echo, Google I/O recap & more

Google’s annual developer event, Google I/O, brought big news last week with the introduction of Google Home, a new device powered by what the company is calling the Google assistant. (Yes, lowercase “a.”) Google Home will compete directly with Amazon’s popular Echo device and its Alexa-powered siblings, Echo and Tap, and indirectly with Apple’s Siri, Microsoft’s Cortana and other smart assistants. In the latest episode of our weekly video show, Marketing Land Live, we talk about where Google may have an advantage over Amazon, despite the latter’s lengthy head start in the in-home device/assistant space. We also recap other Google I/O news such as Firebase Analytics, Android Instant Apps and more. The show also includes discussion of reports last week that Amazon will begin selling its own private-label products and more.Joining me for this week’s show are Marketing Land’s Amy Gesenhues, Ginny Marvin and Greg Sterling. The show runs about 55 minutes and you can watch the replay below. …

What marketers need to know about Google Assistant and Google Home

What started with Siri in 2010 is quickly leading to an age where consumers engage with the internet using only their voices, in much the way Captain Picard engaged with the computer on the USS Enterprise.Google’s foray into voice search has been calculated and planned for years, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. It currently appears to be based on a closed system owned and overseen by Google, not on an open system like the trillions of websites that populate the internet are built on (i.e., HTML). I predicted this eventuality more than two years ago, after the Nest acquisition. These are the problems and challenges brought by Google’s new Assistant that marketers and SEOs alike need to be aware of.Google I/O 2016 announcementOn May 18, 2016, Google announced Google Home, a speaker that houses the new Google Assistant platform and that resembles the Amazon Echo. The Home device seeks to help users complete tasks in the real world, leveraging Google Assistant, which essentially mar…

4 effective local positioning strategies you’re overlooking

As SEOs, we know having the right content, in the right place, at the right time, can work to elevate search positioning and increase a local business’s conversions. After all, getting in front of your customers when, where and how they want to interact with your brand is a leading concept behind inbound marketing. Simply put, if you’re not getting in front of your audience when your audience is trying to find you, you are in trouble — especially on a local level, where multiple competitors compete within close proximity. The idea that content is key to increasing local search visibility is not new, but strategies to determine exactly what content your audience is seeking are constantly discovered. You can create great content all you want, but if your audience isn’t searching on those terms, or if they are uninterested in that content, time and energy spent on producing the material will not render increases in positioning.Great content that your audience is seeking, on the other hand, …

State of video advertising report: what are the most tolerable ad formats?

As video content increases, it’s time for brands to understand their consumers, in order to deliver the most relevant ads to them.Wibbitz conducted a survey in March about video consumption and consumer sentiments regarding video advertising, hoping to help publishers and consumers reach a middle ground.Every publisher looking to expand its services to video content needs to understand its audience first, hearing their needs, in order to deliver the best video experience to them. Here are the most interesting findings from Wibbitz’s report and what we can learn from them:The changing state of video consumptionVideo consumption has been increased during the past years and 26% of people who participated in Wibbitz’s survey responded that they are watching at least one video per day.Mobile devices have significantly contributed to the increased video consumption, as they make videos more accessible and this can be confirmed by the fact that 55% of the frequent video viewers prefer watchin…

How to write a digital data & analytics RFP

The dreaded request for proposal. It can be time-consuming, stressful, with a sometimes disappointingly low return on investment. And that applies to the stakeholders on both sides of the table. To agencies and other vendors who respond, it might feel as though the organization that has put out the RFP holds all the cards, but organizations desperate to find help in meeting their goals often are just as troubled by the process, if not more. And there’s no more vexing dilemma for an organization than trying to source new or emerging talents and skill sets — such as data science and digital analytics — without having the right understanding of what they’re really searching for or what to ask about before calling in outside experts. In fact, that’s likely why they’re looking for help in the first place! At Cardinal Path (my employer), we often hear from marketers who say, “We know we’re looking for help with our data and analytics and marketing optimization strategy, but we don’t know where …

The complete guide to mastering conversion optimization

One of the primary goals of web marketing is to drive new, targeted traffic to the website. Today, we have so many avenues to generate traffic, it’s ridiculous.Search engines are still a significant driver, but social media is catching up as a resource businesses are using to build their brand, establish an audience and bring people to the site who aren’t necessarily out there searching for your product or service — but will use it nonetheless. But driving traffic to the website is just one component of successful web marketing. The whole other side of that is what happens after the visitors arrive.Targeted traffic — while much better than non-targeted traffic — doesn’t automatically convert into customers. Yes, they are more likely to convert than non-targeted visitors, but that is by no means guaranteed — or even likely, in many cases.Your job is to take the (targeted) traffic you’re already getting and figure out how to get them to become customers. But let’s take a step back first. …

It’s time to get personal with email

Everyone with an email inbox knows that there are a lot of people vying for our attention. Every day, I get hundreds of emails. A few of them are even from people I know, but a bunch come from businesses I partner with for Vidyard (my employer), are newsletters I’ve signed up for or are from companies that want me to notice them with the hope I’ll eventually become a customer. If you’re like me, you scan for the most important ones and ignore the rest. Sorry to everyone whose email went to my trash bin. I’m sure it was well-crafted and important.I’m sympathetic to those senders because my company relies on email to reach our potential customers, too. I just don’t have the time to give them all the attention they deserve.I suspect this sounds familiar. The Radicati Group found that business users sent and received on average 121 emails per day in 2014, and that number is expected to rise to 140 emails a day by 2018. Email remains one of the most used ways for marketers to approach a new…

HTC 10 India Launch Scheduled for 26th May

HTC is all set to launch its 2016 flagship, the HTC 10 in India on Thursday, 26th May. The phone was unveiled back in April this year, and there were some unpleasant reports of HTC offering a watered down variant called HTC 10 Lifestyle with Snapdragon 652 and 3GB RAM to its Indian audience. Thankfully, HTC India clarified exclusively with TechPP that they will indeed be launching the real flagship HTC 10 in India too.The latest flagship from HTC comes with an all metallic build like its predecessor, but a relatively refreshed design. The display shapes up as a 5.2-inch QHD unit and the device is powered by the Snapdragon 820 alongside a 4GB of RAM. On the imaging front HTC 10 will boast of a 12-Ultrapixel primary camera unit and a 5-Megapixel secondary sensor. The camera unit will be supplemented with Optical Image Stabilisation, f/1.8 aperture, Pro Mode, Zoe Capture, hyper lapse, 12X slow motion mode and 4K video recording. The other features include Fingerprint sensor, 3000mAh batte…

Five SEM trends ecommerce retailers should expect for the rest of 2016

With the advertising industry becoming more and more competitive each year, many online advertisers are now using search marketing to supplement their organic search results as a way to stand out from the crowd.Although it comes at a price, this form of marketing can provide relevant, high-quality traffic and help with brand exposure, two qualities of many which can be highly beneficial for online retailers.Despite paid search marketing becoming an increasingly popular choice amongst retailers for increasing customer acquisition rates, it can be very profitable. Just earlier this year, Adobe announced the results from its latest Digital Advertising Report, stating that while CPCs in North America were stable with a 0% increase, costs actually decreased in Europe and Asia Pacific with a 4% decline YoY in 2015.What’s more, click-through rates are also improving for paid search, with CTRs increasing by 14% in Europe in 2015. Not only does this show that advertisers are significantly impr…

ROI beyond likes and shares: 5 ways calls validate social ad spending

Social media advertising is on the rise and set to increase exponentially. In fact, a CMO survey of marketing executives reveals a projected increase of 20.9 percent in the social media share of marketing budgets over the next five years.Facebook has already experienced this influx of advertising money, recently reporting a year-over-year increase in ad revenue of 57 percent. Yet only 3.4 percent of the surveyed marketing executives recognize that social media contributes “very highly” to their company’s performance. Why the disconnect? The issue stems from a discrepancy in ROI accountability and transparency after a major shift in the social marketing landscape. Advertising campaigns have never before experienced the kind of potential exposure that is available with social media.Facebook alone offers access to nearly a billion daily active users on mobile phones. While three million advertisers are already monetizing Facebook’s user base, the best practices for measuring true social a…

Why companies create content – part three: to answer customer questions

Part one of our series on Why Companies Create Content we looked at changing customer perception and part two focused on making use of public opinion. This next instalment explores how companies can best construct content to respond to the frequent (and not so frequent) queries that come from their audience.Part three: To answer customer questionsAs consumers we’re a demanding bunch – we don’t just expect excellent customer service, we insist on it and shout from the rooftops when companies aren’t doing what we ask of them. With the ability to browse shops or do our banking 24/7, it’s only natural that you imagine there’d be someone there to answer your queries during the same time period. With our favourite social apps at our fingertips, it’s only natural that instead of listening to Greensleeves on never-ending repeat with a call centre or sending an email into a virtual black hole, we target our questions (or ire) at companies directly, and publicly.Studies vary in the actual specific…
