Moto G4 Plus Review: One Step Forward, One Step Back…

There are many who believe – and with good reason – that the first Moto G spurred the wave of affordable smartphones that did not cut too many corners in terms of performance. When it first appeared in the market three years, the first Moto G was a huge surprise for many users, combining decent hardware with stock Android (and assured updates) at a price that was a third of what many high-end Android flagships were offering. Yes, it did not match them in all departments but it more than held its own in most, which had it a massive hit among those who wanted a great smartphone experience without taking too big a financial hit.The problem with the “great specs and performance at an affordable price” formula, of course, was that it could be copied. And copied it was. With telling effect. The years that have passed since the arrival of the Moto G have seen manufacturers not just clone its essence but boost up spec sheets and undercut its price significantly, so much so that the previous M…

How to Embed a Muted YouTube Video in your Website

It is easy to embed YouTube videos in your website. You grab the default IFRAME embed code, paste it anywhere inside your web page and you’re done. YouTube does offer some basic customization – like you can modify the player dimensions or hide the YouTube branding – but if you would like to exercise more control over the  behavior of the embedded player,  the YouTube Player API is the way to go.This tutorial explains how you can embed a YouTube video that will auto-play when the web page is loaded but with muted audio. For instance, a products website may use short screencasts to highlight features and these videos will autoplay when the page is loaded. AdWords’ new extra headline: 7 ways to make the most of it

Last Tuesday was a big day for AdWords. During our annual Google Performance Summit Keynote, we introduced a wide range of exciting new stuff. What got me most excited was expanded text ads. I think it’s one of the most significant updates to AdWords since the invention of Quality Score. To recap, we’re currently testing ads that have two 30-character headlines and one 80-character description line. These test ads also contain two customizable 15-character path fields that will be appended to your Display URLs automatically. Compared to your existing ads, it’s 45 extra characters in text, plus an additional URL path field. To someone unfamiliar with PPC, 35 characters in a headline and 10 characters of description text are basically nothing. To us in the industry, though, those 45 characters are everything. They’re freeing. They’re Andy Dufresne in the rain at the end of The Shawshank Redemption. More characters = better messaging; more chances to highlight why your business is the best…

Decision trees for SEM segmentation

One of the most common and difficult choices you’ll make when managing an SEM account is deciding when to segment keywords. Any search manager worth his or her salt knows that segmentation is key to PPC optimization, but what’s the best rule for how granular you should get? There are a few different camps on this. There are the long-time advocates of Single Keyword Ad Groups (team SKAG), and even the occasional Single Keyword Campaign. Then, there’s the nearly decades-old “1,000 searches rule,” wherein if you expect a keyword to have more volume than 1,000 searches a month, it needs to be segmented, regardless of messaging. Some people (myself included) religiously believe that match types should be segmented by campaigns, while some simply smash everything together.Regardless of keyword segmentation strategy, most managers rely heavily on a hybrid of bid portfolios and engine bid modifiers to take care of performance nuances for us. A little ironic, no? We were (and still are) collect…

Instagram’s algorithmic feed will officially roll out over the next month

Neirfy / Shutterstock.com Your Instagram feed is officially about to change. After announcing in March that it would test having an algorithm sort people’s feeds based on what they’re most likely to be interested in versus what was most recently post, Instagram will officially roll out its algorithmic feed over the next month, the Facebook-owned photo-and-video sharing service announced on Thursday. The announcement of Instagram’s algorithm cued a freakout among people, mainly influencers and some brands, who worried that the algorithm would mean fewer of their followers seeing their posts. But the opposite may actually be true. According to Instagram, people miss 70% of the posts from the people they follow, which is why it opted to adopt an algorithmic feed.So the idea is that an algorithmic feed would do a better job of showing people the photos and videos they’d be most interested in seeing each time they open Instagram — versus needing to scroll through their feeds to sift them out …
