New insights on the customer decision journey

For years, paid search has centered around clicks. Getting the most clicks. Getting the highest click-through rate. Marketers have obsessed at delivering the most clicks for the lowest cost. But who is behind all of those clicks? And what are they really looking for?New research at Bing Ads now allows us to better understand the customers behind those clicks and where they are in the customer decision journey (CDJ). Such insights not only help advertisers to optimize their campaigns, they also help to further search as the personal assistants of tomorrow. But before we get into search, we first need to understand the consumer mindset and the science behind each customer’s decision journey. All consumers go through five distinct stages, which vary depending on the type of purchase: initiation, research, comparison, transaction and experience. Whether you are hopping online to replace a broken espresso maker or find yourself in the rather unpleasant market for a new hot water heater, you …

Why mix-and-match marketing is the way forward

Remember “You’ve Got Mail”? Before it was a rom-com starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, it was an amiable AOL greeting accompanied by a cartoon mailbox. It was a brilliant marketing opportunity. But it also created unintended consequences that continue to reverberate across the digital industry today. We’ve seen this movieThe beauty of the “You’ve Got Mail” catchphrase was its simplicity. By appropriating established terminology and imagery, AOL eased the transition to online communication and assured novice users that the brave new (virtual) world was not the hostile, technologically complex landscape they feared. It worked. Email quickly supplanted “snail mail” as the preferred means of written communication. The tendency, then, is to think of email as a linear improvement — a step up the evolutionary ladder. But this overlooks a salient point. Other than wiping out personal mail, email has had almost no impact. As a marketing channel, it’s been an unmitigated disaster, with microscopic res…

Is your online marketing agency relationship worth saving?

You may have heard the news when Katy Perry, Jessica Simpson, Simon Cowell and other stars were dumped by their significant others via text.Breakup by text? Worst. Idea. Ever. But if someone breaks up with you via text, odds are that there wasn’t a lot of healthy communication in your relationship in the first place.Unfortunately, poor communication doesn’t just kill romantic relationships — it can also lead to fallings-out in the workplace. For example, the Agency Management Institute reports that 50 percent of companies that use an online marketing agency have changed agencies at least once in the last two years. That’s a staggering statistic. There are a lot of reasons agencies get fired, ranging from lack of results to location changes. Often, however, the biggest reason for changing agencies is the same thing that can poison any relationship: a fundamental lack of communication. Now, if you’re reading this article, odds are that your online marketing agency relationship is on the ro…

5 Key Highlights From the Second Chapter of Elon Musk’s Master Plan

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk has been pursuing the economic dream of sustaining a better future for about ten years now. While from the exterior, it looks like the technology leader is dominating the future to come, Musk’s establishments haven’t been able to generate respectable profit quarters yet. However, they’ve achieved their core target which involves maintaining enough funds to keep going and conjunct more products to their electric automobiles roadmap as well as pushing the solar energy sector forward.Despite constant deadline pitfalls and acquisitions, Tesla is still standing straight and is better than ever, their Model 3 received almost 400,000 registrations crowning it as one of the most successful cars in the US. They’ve been continuously expanding factories and the extremely criticized autopilot function certainly, looks promising. But that was the past. Elon Musk, in a blog post, revealed a bunch of new and upcoming strategies Tesla will be implementing. Hence, here are the to…

M-commerce: has the mobile web finally won?

Not only are more smartphone users purchasing with their mobile devices, but more people are choosing to make those purchases via mobile web rather than via mobile apps. These figures come from the latest European data from ComScore (July 2016), and echoes similar findings in a survey of US shoppers by Forrester (August 2015).This underscores the imperative of striving for excellence in mobile web commerce, not just to facilitate purchases on the small device; but also to help drive onsite (instore, in-restaurant etc.) purchases – in which, we will also see, mobile web plays a critical role. However, while web will be the route to serving the majority of your mobile customers, this does not necessarily prohibit investment in a mobile app. Those retailers which have a sufficiently large core of extremely loyal and very regular mobile shoppers who will download, retain and use a mobile app, may be able to justify the very significant expense of developing, promoting and maintaining a separ…

Why your content and SEO strategy need to be joined up

There are some sites creating useful or interesting content, that are being let down by a lack of attention to SEO. In yesterday’s #semrushchat there was such an example, a site offering copywriting services, but one that seemingly needed to pay more attention to SEO.The site was kreativ forditas, and had submitted itself for review by the semrushchat participants. I’m not going to detail the whole review, but a few SEO-related issues were flagged:Q2: Out of the top 3 issues we have detected with our Site Audit tool, which one should they fix ASAP? #semrushchathttp://pic.twitter.com/zsdLD24bcG— SEMrush (@semrush) 20 July 2016Some are quite easy to fix. For example, meta-descriptions can be added retrospectively and, though it’s not a ranking signal, it should help CTR.The internal linking issue intrigued me, as the site had nofollowed 103 internal links, which just seems an odd thing to do. Looking at the site in more detail, it seems that at least some of the nofollowed internal link…

Tinder Social, an App that Helps you Plan Night out with Friends, Launches Globally

Tinder changed the online dating scene forever four years ago and now the creator of Tinder has announced a new vertical called Tinder Social. This app hinges on the fact that it actually wants People to get social and plan their activities on the app. To be frank there have been apps like WePopp that promised the same but didn’t find their streak of success. But again being backed by the most popular adult dating site, things might turn out differently for Tinder Social. The beta for Tinder Social has already been launched in Australia some time ago. Tinder CEO and cofounder Sean Rad explained that the app is focussed on what people would like to do tonight and is still centric to the immediacy of the idea. Tinder Group is more or less like a group Tinder match but only slightly more complicated. This is how the app will work, both the groups will match only if one of the members from each group matches. Post the match both the groups would get access to group chat. As I pointed out ea…
