Twitter updates interface with quality filter and notification improvements

rvlsoft / Shutterstock.com Twitter is tackling its harassment concerns by making changes to the user experience. Today, the company announced ways users can enjoy Twitter without the abuse.Changes include being able to limit notifications only to people who you follow on Twitter (if opted in; otherwise, the experience remains unchanged) and a quality filter, now open to all users. This option can also be turned on to improve the quality of tweets, focusing on account age and user behavior. Two simple settings to give you better control over your Twitter experience. https://t.co/pEJuMUhCYshttp://pic.twitter.com/jmFd0rDoV6— Twitter Support (@Support) August 18, 2016This is one step in the direction of what seems to be an attempt to address pressing concerns that Twitter acts as a platform for free speech at the expense of extreme harassment and damaging statements. Still, while filtering out content may work, it doesn’t eliminate the harassment. Here’s hoping Twitter will address that iss…

How to solve duplicate content local SEO issues for multi-location businesses

Earlier this year, I wrote an article on Moz that talked about one of the issues big brands run into with SEO. Brands with tons of locations sometimes have a hard time coming up with unique content for each of their locations and often use a template format that gets the majority of them filtered. So, what can multi-location businesses do to help improve their location pages and avoid the filter? Following are four tips for putting together rich, unique location page content.1. Use testimonialsI came across a great example of this with insurance companies. Currently in Houston, TX, Allstate Insurance has 146 offices, State Farm has 173 offices, and Farmers Insurance has 232 offices. Each one of these offices has a unique location page, but they are all technically competing with each other for the same exact keywords, like “auto insurance Houston” or “brand name + Houston.” This is what causes Google’s filter to kick in, and the majority of the pages will get filtered from the search r…

4 ways for Twitter to stay relevant

When asked where my clients put their social advertising dollars to drive real ROI, I frequently find myself saying, “Facebook is like the Google of social, and Twitter is like Bing.” I hate saying it, but it’s the reality.Facebook dominates in terms of ad dollars and performance and has the user base and engagement to back up growth that doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. As you’ll read later on, some burgeoning, not-yet-public platforms like Pinterest and Snapchat may be in a better position than Twitter to take ad revenue from Facebook. In this article, I’m going to outline four things I think Twitter needs to do not just to survive, but to thrive.Be laser-focused on driving advertising revenueIn the second quarter of 2016, Facebook drove a whopping $6.24 billion in advertising revenue (up 63 percent year over year). That’s compared with Twitter’s $535 million (up 18 percent year over year). While Twitter’s ad revenue is increasing, it’s not happening anywhere close to fa…

No Custom Duties on Consumer Electronics Worth up to Rs 50,000 in India

Importing consumer electronics from other countries is no less than an ordeal in India. Be it the customs levied on the item or the actual cost assessment done by the customs. However, the latest circular by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has made it more affordable for Indians to import the electronic goods. Previously, the total value of the slab was set at Rs 2,000 beyond which the customs would be levied at a flat 41.492%. But in a rather surprising move, the limit has been enhanced to Rs 50,000.The amended provision states as follows, “Consumer electronic items (except hearing aids and life-saving equipment’s, apparatus and appliances and parts thereof): Provided that the c.i.f value of goods imported as aforesaid at any one time shall not exceed rupees fifty thousand.” Now this opens a floodgate for people like us who would import electronics.Usually, the insurance, cost of freight and the customs together inflate the price of the item to such an extent that it simply doe…

Is India Really the Next Big Market for iPhones?

The iPhone accounts for the vast majority of Apple’s revenue and an even greater majority of Apple’s profits. Depending on how well the iPhone sells, Apple can either have a spectacular quarter or a really bad quarter. Apple is trying to make investors focus more on its growing service revenues, but for the forseeable future, iPhone will continue to be the center piece of Apple’s earnings. To be clear, iPhone has been the best selling electronic gadget ever. In fact, very recently the billionth iPhone was sold. There is hardly any other product that has made as much sales, revenue and profit as the iPhone has. It has had enormous growth ever since it was launched back in 2007. The first time pressure was felt on iPhone sales was when the iPhone 5s had launched. However, Apple moving to the phablet territory with the iPhone 6 and Apple’s deal with China Mobile had increased iPhone sales once again. But the boost gained from China didn’t last much and for the past 2-3 quarters, there is …

Welcome to Part 4 of my five-part series on how to work more effectively with ad partners in highly regulated industries. The series is designed for advertisers who feel overwhelmed by government ad regulations and want tips on avoiding costly lawsuits. In these industries, a simple marketing mistake that ignores these regulations can lead to a federal-level, multi-million-dollar lawsuit for your advertising partners and you as the brand holder.Today we tackle the education industry. Check out my last two articles on Finance and Retail if you work in these industries, and stay tuned in two weeks for the final piece on pharmaceutical ads.An important note before I jump in. When I say “ad partners,” I’m referring to the full partner spectrum, including:individual bloggers paid with free products;commissioned affiliate marketers; andmore established resellers. As the CEO of The Search Monitor, I help advertisers find examples of ad violations from these groups. I mostly hear that partners …

Parse.ly now provides site and app publishers with full raw data

Parsely is the leaf garnish that fans say offers so much more than you think. And today its namesake company, Parse.ly, is offering a Data Pipeline that provides publishers with so much more data about their website or app than they thought was there. (Kinda works, right?)The New York City-based company provides publisher-oriented data through a dashboard for marketers and an API with summary data. The new Data Pipeline, CTO and co-founder Andrew Montalenti told me, makes accessible to developers and data scientists all the underlying raw data that goes into the API’s feed. As he wrote in a blog post announcing the Pipeline:“The key thing to understand is that Parse.ly’s HTTP/JSON API summarizes information about traffic and content for the purposes of quickly providing a way to provide on-site content links; traffic snapshots for quick data exports; or simple integrations of Parse.ly traffic data with existing content management systems. The API is not a full-fidelity accounting of all…
