The human side to SEO: the power of personas

Why do companies invest in SEO? Is it to generate more traffic? Leads? Brand identity? All of these are good reasons to invest in search, but I believe the reason so many invest comes down to something much more important.SEO, at its core, is about creating connections. Connections are what fuel growth. Businesses invest in SEO for the opportunity to create a connection with their target audience — without these connections, there can be no traffic, leads, brand exposure or sales. But how can we use SEO to create these connections? Furthermore, how can we use it to create the right connections? Before you can reach an audience, you have to define it. Persona profiling is something that has been used for decades in the marketing industry, and mapping out who your audience is will give you a deeper insight into how to most effectively reach them. We’ve all heard and read about the importance of “user-focused SEO strategies,” but how many of us are really putting them into practice? In orde…

Why the best email marketing happens when you don’t hit “send”

When done right, an automated email is like a breath of fresh air in the inbox. It’s relevant, personalized and timely — everything your subscribers want when they sign up for your email list. And for marketers, it’s a beautiful thing: They can save time, deliver a great inbox experience and drive top-notch results without ever hitting “send.”Plus, automation works, with Epsilon reporting 75 percent higher open rates and 162 percent higher click rates. Sounds pretty good, right? However, to get the most out of automation, marketers need to think beyond a one-time welcome email or a simple event reminder. Here are five ways you can use advanced automation techniques to win the inbox, big time.1. Welcome new subscribers with open arms.A subscriber will never be more engaged and interested in hearing from your brand than the moment after he or she joins your email list. So that first impression is super-important.Many organizations send a single automated welcome email, which by itself is…

Integrate lifetime value to benefit a customer-led SEO strategy

I recently attended Edinburgh’s Turing Festival. (It’s a fantastic tech conference, and of course, Edinburgh is a fantastic city; you should go!)Speakers included many names familiar to those in the online marketing industry, such as Moz’s Rand Fishkin, Seer Interactive’s Wil Reynolds and Unbounce’s Oli Gardner. And while each presentation had a high standard with thoughtful takeaways, the most insightful speaker to me was Andy Young.Young spoke about data-driven growth, and although his presentation was more tailored to startups, it had strong parallels for in-house and agency marketers looking to help their businesses or clients gain an edge in their digital marketing strategy. In particular, he talked about how to build cohort segmentation into your web performance analysis to discover which marketing channels were generating better customers.Young neatly defined solving lifetime value analysis as a subset of correctly attributing direct traffic, so that a user can be further class…

Reliance Jio to Offer 1 Year of Free 4G with Lyf Smartphones [Report]

Reliance Jio has been creating waves in the market ever since its preview plan offering unlimited free calls, data and SMS for 90 days went official a few weeks back. Now, as per some reports, Reliance is planning to offer Free 4G to Lyf smartphone buyers for an extended period of one year.Initially, the Reliance Jio Preview offer was rolled out for a handful of Lyf smartphones. However, the increasing demand for Jio SIM cards possibly triggered smartphone OEMs to tie up with Reliance to provide the exclusive Jio Preview offer to their smartphone owners. The first to the race was Samsung and they were closely followed by other counterparts including LG, Asus, Panasonic, Micromax, YU, Alcatel and TCL. Recently, the Reliance Digital stores across the country also started providing Jio SIM cards under the preview offer to any users with 4G smartphones. That said, still now some Reliance stores are denying to offer SIM cards for any random 4G smartphone citing lack of information from the…

Fuisz partners with Sizmek for automated object-recognition in video ads

Image from Fuisz Video Way back in the last century, I worked with interactive video’s first commercial incarnation, videodiscs tethered to computers. But now it’s the 21st Century, and there are a variety of ways for users to interact with online video, including Spotful’s overlays with apps and Advrtas’ 360-degree video.Santa Monica, California-based Fuisz Video offers what interactive video really wanted all along, the ability to tag an object — say, the cup an actor is holding in the clip — and then let a clickable hotspot automatically follow the cup throughout the video. Now, Fuisz is integrating its technology with ad platform Sizmek so marketers can programmatically deploy video ads with object-based hotspots. Here’s an example, and here’s a gallery of such video ads.For instance, if you’re watching a video ad from the Gap, you can click on various clothes at any time during the video, see product info on each one, and, if the retailer so desires, buy any of the items. The idea i…

Major internet companies support Yelp in case that threatens online reviews

A case involving Yelp and a “default judgment” against someone (defendant Bird) who wrote a critical Yelp review about a San Francisco attorney (plaintiff Dawn Hassell) could dramatically impact the online review economy if the decision is allowed to stand. That’s why Google, Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and numerous others have submitted letters to the California Supreme Court and urged the court to review and overturn the case.On Yelp, Hassell has mostly positive reviews but unwisely decided to sue Bird for defamation over a negative review (which has now been updated). Bird didn’t defend against the suit so there was no real hearing on the merits and Hassell was able to obtain a default judgment and damages. The trial court then issued an injunction compelling Yelp to remove the review. Yelp refused because it had never been notified of the suit or allowed to participate. But the trial court and an appellate court upheld the injunction against Yelp.Read Birdzeye B.‘s review of The …
