Facebook paid $22 billion for WhatsApp’s user data and now it’s getting it

Facebook didn’t pony up $22 billion for WhatsApp just for its messaging app. Facebook was exchanging one type of currency for another that it’s been able to cash into billions: data. And now it’s getting it.WhatsApp updated its privacy policy on Thursday to state that it will now be sharing people’s account information — but not their messages — with Facebook, unless people follow these steps to opt out within 30 days. That means Facebook will be able to match the phone numbers people submit when signing up for WhatsApp to the ones they may have attached to their Facebook profiles to connect those accounts. Facebook will be able to use that connection and the data it gets from WhatsApp like people’s contact lists to figure out which ads or other content to show people on Facebook. It’s a clever loophole to honor the letter, but not necessarily the spirit, of the pledge WhatsApp made to its users shortly after the Facebook deal was announced in February 2014.“Respect for your privacy is …

Bing Ads Editor now supports separate ads for search and MSN.com native ads

The latest version of Bing Ads Editor supports custom ads development for native. Instead of creating one ad to be served in both search and native ad environments, advertisers can now create ads specifically for native inventory on MSN.com in bulk using the tool.“Native ads perform better when they explain benefits and entice users to read more about a product and service, as opposed to a typical call to action in a search ad,” says Bing Ads in the announcement.Distinct native ad copy is already supported in the Bing Ads web interface. Native ad formats will only serve in MSN.com placements as long as there is at least one search ad in the ad group. If there is no search ad included in the ad group, the native ad copy will be eligible for both search and native placements. The new version of Bing Ads Editor also now supports callout extensions and will automatically de-dupe elements from campaigns imported from Google AdWords.

Amazon launches Vehicles, a new destination for car shoppers

Amazon is getting its feet wet in the car shopping business with today’s launch of Amazon Vehicles. It’s not a car store; you can’t buy cars (yet?) through Amazon.com. But it certainly moves the company much further down the path toward selling cars. For now, Amazon Vehicles is a research destination aimed at helping anyone looking to buy a car, car parts or accessories. It offers details on new and old cars, ranging — as Amazon’s press release points out — from a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (shown below) to a 1965 Ford Mustang. It has car images, videos and customer reviews, and a forum of car enthusiasts where shoppers can connect to get additional questions answered person-to-person.As a research destination, Amazon Vehicles competes immediately with the big online car sites like Cars.com, Edmunds.com, AutoTrader.com and others. It will also compete with the official sites of car manufacturers like Ford, Toyota and others. And it may also impact Google by offering car shoppers an alt…

Snapchat is pushing for shorter ads between Stories, within Live Stories

Long story short: After pushing for shorter video ads around the time it began to intersperse ads between people’s Stories in June and noticing how little time advertisers have to grab its viewers’ attentions, Snapchat is zeroing in on exactly how much shorter it would like brands’ ads to be.In conversations with brands and their agencies, Snapchat has been pushing for advertisers to cut their typically 10-second-long video ads to 7 seconds when running between Stories and 5 seconds when running within Live Stories, according to several people with knowledge of those conversations. All of these people said that Snapchat is only pushing these lengths as recommendations and not requirements or replacements for its 10-second maximum length, at least not yet. A Snapchat spokesperson declined to comment. The recommendations have frustrated some brand and agency execs who see it as another reset button on their digital video ad strategies. First advertisers had to create all-new video ads to …

A CMO’s View: StubHub rebrands itself to show it is “more than just a ticket”

In May of this year, StubHub launched its first global campaign to introduce a new brand identity aimed at modernizing the company’s look and feel. According to StubHub CMO Jennifer Betka, the rebrand effort included an entirely new set of design choices, with a more contemporary logo and a bolder and more flexible color palette.“It was a concerted, thoughtful effort to modernize StubHub’s identity, appeal to a wider variety of audiences across every aspect of experiences by genre, and place the power of emotion that comes with attending live experiences at the forefront of our brand,” says Betka. The CMO says the transition from StubHub’s former logo-design to its new stage-like representation was a way to carry forward the idea that events and concerts are inherently social, as well as provoke a sense of imagination around event experiences.“All of these elements are intended to strategically position StubHub as your ticket out, inspiring people to envision themselves as part of the…

Email marketing is more than just hitting the send button

Email marketing continues to reign supreme atop the return-on-investment charts, beating out SEO, content marketing and paid search. When it comes to dollar-for-dollar investments, no other marketing channel beats email.Still, brands can’t expect to hash out lackluster email campaigns, hit the send button, and then just wait for the money to roll in. Launching a successful email campaign means avoiding common pitfalls while delivering timely, relevant offers that resonate with customers.Make sure your email personalization is done rightIt’s no surprise that some email personalization efforts miss the mark — such as emails that promote events happening in geographic regions far from a customer’s reach. What are practical solutions marketers can employ right now to ensure email personalization isn’t just another catchphrase?1. Deliver timely, relevant — NOT creepy — emails.Geolocation technology and contextual marketing tools give marketers the ability to create email marketing campaign…

Why mobile commerce sites should be designed for context

If you want your m-commerce project to deliver the results you’re expecting, context should be front and centre of your design.Across all industries, mobile traffic is eating into PC web traffic in a big way, even in economies which have a large installed base of consumer PCs.But ecommerce sites aren’t seeing mobile web visitors, particularly those who use smartphones, converting to mobile shoppers with the same success as PC shoppers. As Andy Favell writes in ClickZ Intelligence’s new report, ‘The DNA of a Great M-Commerce Site Part 2: The 12 Pillars of Mobile Design’:“It is fair to conclude that conversions would be higher if the m-commerce experience on the web was better designed with smartphone users in mind. M-commerce sites that crack this will sell more.”One of the most consistent mistakes made with mobile site design is a failure to take into account the differing circumstances, needs and intentions of smartphone users; in other words, their unique context. The difference betwe…

Five common keyword research mistakes you need to avoid

Before you dive into keyword research for your site, you should know about these common mistakes that many businesses and SEO firms make.Avoiding these mistakes can save you time, help you re-think your marketing strategy, and drive the right customers to your site.1) Picking keywords that are irrelevant to your customersPeople often pick keywords with high search volumes in their field, but don’t pay enough attention to the relevancy of these keywords to their target customers. You need to choose keywords that match your customer’s concerns. For example, if you’re targeting affluent families who are searching for good schools for their kids, you shouldn’t pick keywords like “low cost public schools ny” or “affordable schools ny”. These families aren’t searching for those keywords. Instead, you should optimize for keywords such as “best schools ny” and “elite boarding schools ny”Each of your target customers have different needs and concerns, and they use different words when they sear…

The wonderful, horrible world of creating a new product category

Helping create a new technology category is unquestionably one of the most satisfying experiences of my career. It’s also one of the hardest, most frustrating and uncertain experiences of my career. Sometimes, an idea barely makes it out of the gate.Years ago at Adobe, we tried to create a category called “Network Publishing.” It was a great idea. That nobody else got. Without any traction, we folded up the tent after six months or so and moved on.But for marketers (or anyone else) who has been at a company that has truly led the creation of a new category, you tend to speak of that time in reverential terms. People who were at Eloqua in the mid-2000s as they helped create the marketing automation category typically talk about it as the high point of their career. As Eloqua became the category-defining leader of this new space, there was immense satisfaction knowing that they had come together as a team and achieved something special.Right now, Demandbase is experiencing all of this a…

How to make speed a core part of your traffic and conversion strategy

Speed can make more of a difference to the success of your online business than anything else, yet very few people talk about it.If you can increase the speed of your site, traffic can increase and conversion can double. Here I won’t just be talking about your website speed, but the overall “speed experience” of your online business.A 2015 Microsoft study that surveyed 2,000 people and monitored brain activity of 112 additional people with EEGs, revealed that the average human attention span has reduced to eight seconds, from 12 seconds in the year 2000.Interestingly, declining attention spans is affecting online transactions as well. Here are some interesting statistics on what happens when you delay people’s access to your website:A one second delay in page load time will result in a 7% loss in conversion.40% of people will abandon your website if it takes longer than three seconds to load.A study that monitored real time data from 33 major retailers found that improving a site’s loa…

WhatsApp’s Updated Terms Involves Sharing User Data With Facebook

Two years back when WhatsApp was acquired by Facebook, privacy concerns were the focal point given the latter’s aggressive data collecting algorithms for businesses and advertisements. However, these apprehensions were put to rest by WhatsApp’s Co-founder Jan Koum in a public blog post where he stated “Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible: You don’t have to give us your name and we don’t ask for your email address.” Unfortunately, things have taken a drastic turn as the company announces it will be sharing user data with its parent company – Facebook to improve profile connections. The updated terms and policies mention their services are now owned by Facebook and documents their recent additions including end-to-end encryption, voice-calling and more. Although the main focus here is the part where they talk about businesses. WhatsApp will be, from now on, sharing personal details like individua…

WhatsApp Now Allows you to Send Videos as GIFs

GIF’s support for WhatsApp has been around the corner and the Animated GIF folder in our directory is further tantalizing most of us. It’s a known fact that the feature can be switched on in the rooted device but not all of us prefer to root our devices for the glorious GIF. Android Police has spotted the GIF option enabled on beta version 2.16.242 and it is most likely the feature is also present in the more recent versions. Now unlike the document option or the call option the GIF option is not something that would immediately grab your attention, the reason being that it is neatly tucked away in the sub menus. Another caveat is that one cannot still send the GIF’s from gallery or the storage as the app converts actual videos into GIF’s before sending them. Here is how you can send the GIF, first go to any of the conversations> click on attachment option>choose camera>Record Video>after recording click ok.Now comes the slightly tricky part, after clicking on ok the WhatsA…

Google’s Project Fi Wi-Fi Assistant will now be Available for all Nexus Devices

Google has announced that the Wi-Fi Assistant which was an integral part of its Project Fi is going to be available for all Nexus devices irrespective of the carriers they are latched to. The Wi-Fi Assistant technology was used to automatically and securely connect the devices to free public Wi-Fi hotspots. Project Fi was a much acclaimed experimental wireless service that blended coverage from mobile networks and Wi-Fi networks by accessing the millions of free public hotspots. The cornerstone of the Project Fi was that Google encrypted the data that was transmitted between the free public Wi-Fi and the user’s smartphone, an essential feature while connecting to public Wi-Fi. Now Google will allow all Nexus users to access the Wi-Fi Assistant feature without the need to change the carriers. This means that if you own a Nexus device you would probably manage to conserve a major chunk of the mobile data that you would be otherwise using when away from your home network. As we mentioned …

Six Android Nougat Features You Might Not Know About

Android’s seventh major update – Nougat is finally out of beta and available for every eligible Nexus phone. Along with some visual overhauls, it has ushered in a lot of significant improvements over Marshmallow. The crucial changes include features like multi-window, notification shade redesign, Vulkan API support, Daydream for virtual reality, a dedicated JIT compiler for faster booting times and more. However, these additions have overlooked a bunch of minor tweaks and functions that are definitely worth looking into. Hence, here are six such lesser known features that come bundled with Android 7.0.1. The Return of Facial RecognitionYes, the face unlock has returned after being dropped unexpectedly on Lollipop and Marshmallow. It works exactly like it used to with no alterations whatsoever which is actually quite bewildering. Did Google added it merely for reaching that 250 features count? Alike before, you scan your face and if the handset recognizes, you’re in. You can’t authenti…
