Sony’s Patent to Disable Any Camera Using WiFi or Bluetooth

Two months back, the USPTO awarded Apple a patent disclosing the method to block a user’s camera where photography or video recording is prohibited. The patented technology received mixed responses.Danny from The Guardian, for example, found the idea legit for concerts, plays, museums, etc., where smartphone users violate “no photography” rule almost every time. Danny, however, was afraid that a govt. or a police could use the technology to block recording of a protest, for instance. One thing worth noting here is that Apple’s patent doesn’t focus strictly on stopping a user from recording videos at concerts or photographing cool paintings at art galleries. One embodiment of it, on the other hand, discloses providing extra information of the clicked images.Say, you capture pic of a rare artifact in a museum, then as per the patent, an infrared device installed in the museum will send info related to the artifact on your phone. The image below will make it apparent.Depending on where yo…

Volta ZAP is India’s First Crossover Electric Bike that Promises Range of upto 60kms on a Single Charge

Volta ZAP is an all-new crossover electric bike unveiled by a relatively unknown Chennai based startup called Volta Motors. This, however, isn’t the first electric two-wheeler to be unveiled by an Indian startup, rather Ather Energy was the first to the race with the launch of their Ather S340.Unlike Ather S340 which was an electric scooter, the Volta ZAP looks just like a conventional cycle with a battery back built onto it. It, however, comes with a rugged look, therefore, standing by the company’s claim of a crossover electric bike. Volta ZAP’s battery pack is capable of delivering a range of 60km without even pedaling thereby resulting in an approximate running cost of about 7 paisa/km. The startup apparently claims that the maintenance of their bike is even lower than the conventional bikes out there. And it goes without saying, that another advantage of the Volta ZAP lies in its eco-friendly nature, thus making it suitable to become a daily commute replacement for many India.Vol…

5 Key Success Factors For Ad Re-Targeting Within A Budget

Re-targeting.It’s a natural result of online shopping and increasingly sophisticated technology.A customer visits an online retailer, looks at specific items, but then does not make a purchase (or abandons their shopping cart). That retailer wants to shout:“Come back! Think about this some more”.Unfortunately, the retailer cannot call out to the person or persuade them to purchase anything before they leave the store.Enter Ad Re-TargetingRe-targeting is a great way for retailers to re-connect with those “lookers”.Retailers try to remind them about what they were considering and encourage them to have another look.If all goes well, the customer will make that purchase.Retailers do this by purchasing ad space on certain sites that the window shopper uses regularly (eg Yahoo, GoogleFacebook, etc.).The concept behind re-targeting is that consumers will often visit a site a few times and look at the same item or category of items before they actually make a purchase.Instead of hoping that…

Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 to Come with Cortex A73 Cores and LTE Cat 9 [Report]

Qualcomm has had a great run in 2016 thanks to its upgraded lineup of Snapdragon chips designed especially for smartphones and tablets. This is in contrary to 2015, where the shipments slumped due to increased competition from Mediatek and Exynos. Now the chipmaker is all set to refresh one of its most popular mid-range SoCs with an all new Snapdragon 653 chip.Just in case you are unaware, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 and 652 have been among the most popular chips for the leading chipmaker in 2016. With major upgrades over its predecessor, they succeeded in replacing the reigning Mediatek 6752 to become the prime choice in almost all mid-range smartphones. Starting from the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 to the Sony Xperia X Performance, Snapdragon 650 can be seen inside many smartphones. Apparently, Qualcomm launched Snapdragon 652 as an improved version of their 650, with Cortex A72 cores inside early this year. This time around, Qualcomm is reported to make use of four Cortex A73 cores clocked …

WhatsApp Beta Now Comes with Front Flash, Larger Emojis and One-Finger Video Zoom

WhatsApp has now rolled out yet another beta built of their app, but this time around, it comes with a hoard of interesting features including the inclusion of something called ‘Front Flash’.Just in case you are unaware, the popular messaging app always rolls out their upcoming features to beta users first before pushing to whole of its user base. That said, anyone can download a beta version of the app from their website. Alternatively, you can download an apk file from file sharing sites like ApkMirror. Coming back to the update, the WhatsApp v2.16.263 comes with a total of four new features according to the official changelog on the Playstore.Well, WhatsApp is generally quite slow in updating their official changelog and this time around it’s no different. Apparently the first two features have been there in WhatsApp for some time now and even the stable version of the app comes with these features. However, the same isn’t true for the last two. Now the beta version of the app come…

Twitter rolls out an app for Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant

Copyright Aaron Durand (@everydaydude) for Twitter, Inc. Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant now speaks Twitter.Twitter has rolled out an app called Twitter Reader so that people can have their Amazon Echo smart speakers or other Alexa-enabled devices recite their Twitter feeds. The app — which appears to be the first Alexa app from a major social network — seems to be coming from Twitter the news company more than Twitter the social network, since Twitter Reader serves mainly as an audible news reader a la Alexa’s built-in Flash Briefings. In addition to reciting people’s main timelines, the Twitter Reader app, or “skill” in Amazon’s chosen parlance, can read aloud what topics are trending on Twitter near where the person’s location or somewhere else. People can then ask for a sample of tweets corresponding to one of these trends.Particularly vain people can ask Alexa, via Twitter Reader, to check if anyone has mentioned them on Twitter or retweeted one of their tweets as well as to call ou…

Facebook’s humanless sifting of trending news suggests some AI needs supervision

Rokas Tenys / Artificial intelligence (AI) is powering marketing tools at various levels, with some products and many predictions emerging that forecast self-managed platforms. But Facebook’s removal last month of human editors from its Trending Topics team, and the resulting errors in judgment by its AI-powered algorithm, raise questions if AI — at least for the foreseeable future — can be left alone without human supervision. Among other tasks, the editors had created short descriptions that accompanied the topics. In particular, there may be some kinds of content and contexts — such as the combo of news and Facebook — where human sensibility is still required. The human editing process had come under fire from conservatives following a story in Gizmodo about whether conservative-oriented viewpoints were neglected. Facebook conducted an internal review that found no evidence of bias, but decided anyway to remove the humans from the process. Human engineers still remain …
