Just 36% of people entering the tech industry are women

The technology industry is lagging behind many other sectors when it comes to the proportion of women taking up entry level positions. This is according to US research by McKinsey in their new report: Women in the WorkplaceThe study surveyed 132 companies which collectively employ more than 4.6m people. It shows that while 75% of CEOs in corporate America are saying gender equality is a top ten priority – and in the wake of the high-profile Gamergate controversy – tech is still woefully behind.Women entering the tech industry are far outnumbered by men and they lose ground on every step of the ladderThe McKinsey report separates out key industries in the US and shows the proportion of women working at each stage of the corporate ladder. For the tech industry (including electronics, hardware, software and IT) just 36% of entry level positions are accounted for by women. This proportion goes down to 31% at manager level and an even lower 19% at the C-Suite level.Tech is certainly lagging …

Bring Back the 3.5mm Jack for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus with Fuze Cases

Apple ditching the 3.5mm Audio jack in iPhone 7 divided the entire world into two bastions, one that loved the iPhone and had made themselves comfy about the idea and other, the haters who were waiting for their pound of flesh by ridiculing the iPhone 7. Well, what happened here is that it left the third set of people who were looking forward to buying an iPhone but the very idea of a missing 3.5mm jack made them unsure of the device. We had earlier explained how the Apple Dock could solve your problem but again one cannot carry it everywhere they go.Ladies and Gentleman what we have here is Fuze, an iPhone 7 case that promises to bring back the 3.5mm headphone jack and in the meanwhile also bump up your phone’s backup. Yes, the Fuze is the first iPhone case that not only packs a battery but also a 3.5mm jack. Essentially this is what the Fuze does, it connects the lightning to a 3.5mm adapter and the circuit for this has been built in the case, so no more dangling adapters. Also, the …

What’s more important than a B2B buyer’s lead score?

Sometimes I think about changing famous movie quotes to include marketing terms. I will admit that I may need to get out more, but these can be instructive in drawing some analogies to the topic at hand. Since this post is about leads, here are a few:May the leads be with you.Show me the leads. You can’t handle the leads.B2B marketing is often all about generating leads for sales. And in our demand-driven culture, where marketing is held accountable for having an impact on revenue, it has become even more prevalent. There are many ways to generate leads, and the process definitely influences the quality of leads that come in. If you approach the process with the scrappy mindset of a ragtag bunch of rebels who are trying to save the universe, your leads will reflect that.If you are in constant battles with sales, especially concerning their low opinion of your lead quality, that doesn’t serve anyone well. And they will never follow up with those leads. If you spent your whole marketing bu…

How paid search and personalisation can work together

We don’t generally think of paid search as a great channel for personalisation, but increasingly, it’s becoming one.Caroline Reynolds, VP of Paid Search at iProspect, gave a presentation at the Content Marketing Association’s most recent Digital Breakfast explaining exactly how personalisation and paid search can work together. It’s never been easier to reach people through the myriad marketing channels at our disposal, and yet it’s also never been harder to make a real connection with them. Marketers are discovering that personalisation is key to this: it allows them to build an emotional connection with consumers in a way that was never possible before.“It’s all about that personal, adaptive and valuable connection,” said Reynolds. So how can this be done using paid search? The audience revolutionWith paid search, Reynolds explained in her presentation, small and large brands alike are on a level playing field. A paid search spot is a paid search spot – and even though larger brands mi…

First Impressions: Lenovo Z2 Plus – It’s got the Specs, the Price… and the Looks too!

When it was launched a few days ago, we had wondered if the Lenovo Z2 Plus could be to the brand what the Mi 3 was to Xiaomi in India (you can read our rationale at http://ift.tt/2cI9hYO). The reason was simple: the device seemed to deliver a lot in terms of hardware and design for a price tag that was well below anything the competition – which includes the likes of the OnePlus 3, the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the LeEco Le Max 2 – had to offer.Well, we have got our hands on a review unit of the device yesterday and so far, nothing has made us change our opinion. First off, the Z2 Plus is a handsome and surprisingly compact device, thanks to Lenovo’s decision to opt for a 5.0-inch display rather than a larger one, as most of its rivals have of late. At 141.7 mm in length and a thickness of 8.5 mm, the phone is slightly shorter than the Samsung Galaxy S7, if not quite as slim, and at 149 grammes, relatively lightweight. It will fit most hands with ease, we think. And most hands will be glad to ca…

Understanding the impact of speech recognition software on search

In the movie Her, Joaquin Pheonix plays a lonely and heartbroken man who develops strong romantic feelings for his mobile operating system. “Samantha,” as he calls it, speaks to him, listens to him, and ultimately becomes a major part of his life.As technology stands right now, we may not be at the point of making real “human” connections with our mobile devices, but we do talk to them. We talk to them a lot.Mobile technology is progressing quickly, and soon, speech recognition software will become even more advanced and far more prevalent than it is now.Ultimately, improved speech recognition software will have a significant impact on how the public uses search engines. As search engine queries evolve, the results will naturally follow suit.Consequently, SEO practices will be affected and businesses will have to develop new techniques (or alter current methods) for optimizing their websites.Speech recognition software: the road to successSmartphone speech recognition software has been…

Your best users: Where they are and how to find them

How well do you think you know the users who come to your website? Can you tell me about your best customer’s buying habits? Or maybe how long your average customer goes between purchases? Or which customer channel converts more than any other channel? Most marketers will unwaveringly claim to know a wealth of information about their customers. However, when I start peeling the onion layers and asking some tough questions, I find I have tapped into some different emotions (like frustration from realizing that they can’t answer my questions). Can you quantitatively tell me your website’s customer profile is based on your RFM (recency, frequency, monetary) analysis? If not, let me help you.I’m a conversion optimizer and am fanatical about web analytics and data. It’s what I am. It’s what I do. In my world, everything starts and ends with analytics and conversions. By now, you have probably said to yourself, “Why do I care about this?”Here is why. It bugs me to no end when someone says they “…
