9 hard truths about links

Countless articles about links are written every day. Many of them are excellent, filled with some really good tips to help you do well. Some of them are awful, full of bad advice. However, the biggest thing that bugs me about link-building advice is this: a lot of it pretends to offer guarantees.People talk about how to Penguin-proof sites, how to avoid being manually penalized and so on. As an extremely paranoid link builder who has seen many examples of unfairness online, I don’t believe there are any guarantees, and below you’ll see why that is.1. No link is risk-freeHow many types of links have previously been acceptable, only to eventually be written into Google’s guidelines as being a link scheme or some other violation? For example, theoretically, a nofollowed link should be risk-free. Would I bet on it? Nope. And honestly, who has a profile full of only nofollowed links? That would look very strange, no? What’s going to happen when Google finds a way to do something different …

How Google Symptom Search will affect the healthcare industry

Google’s Symptom Search is revolutionizing the patient path to treatment, and doctors should embrace this development as an opportunity to provide better care, rather than as a threat to their credibility. This past week, I was catching up with a friend who told me about a recent life-or-death situation he found himself in.He had just undergone foot surgery to take care of bone spurs – a pretty standard procedure that offers little cause for concern. After returning home, he found himself experiencing calf pain, yet being the type to grin and bear it, he just decided to ignore it. But soon enough his pain became too intense for even him to hide and his wife grew increasingly concerned. She decided to join her husband for his post-op appointment with the doctor, assuming he would downplay the severity of his pain. Just as she expected, my friend acted as if nothing was wrong, and the doctor unsurprisingly sent him on his way.Luckily, she had the wherewithal to whip out her phone and do a…

Email as a service: Bridging the gap between digital marketing and brick-and-mortar experiences

What if emails weren’t just marketing tools? In fact, what would happen if email became a service, a linchpin in brands’ efforts to create seamless multi-channel shopping experiences?Believe it or not, email as a service exists. And for the right brands, it’s opening the door to opportunities that bridge the gap between digital communication and physical product interactions. What is email as a service?Traditionally, marketing emails have focused on delivering a promotion or offer to specific groups of subscribers. If the message hits home, the subscriber clicks a link to receive more information, take advantage of the discount or (fingers crossed) make a purchase.Sounds great, right? It is. But there’s a catch: consumers overwhelmingly prefer brick-and-mortar experiences to online shopping. In Q2 2016, e-commerce sales accounted for just 8.1 percent of total sales, according to data published by the US Department of Commerce. So, brands that are unable to parlay marketing emails into i…

Now feel this: Immersion launches first Haptic Ad Service

A haptic rumbling video ad for a movie about ex-agent Jason Bourne. San Jose, California-based Immersion has launched its Haptic Ad Service for the development, management, and tracking of mobile ads that provide physical feedback, like car engine vibration, thunder rumble, or horse hooves’ impacts.VP of Marketing and Product Management Todd Whitaker told me that this is the first time for feel-based mobile advertising at scale, something that cannot be offered in, say, TV or laptop/desktop ads. He added that, while there are other, one-off haptic ads, “we’re not aware of any competitor” offering such a service.Examples: shaking a martini in an ad for Stoli vodka, feeling the engine rumble in a Peugeot ad, or detecting a slight vibration when the lights flicker in a trailer for American Poltergeist. You can check out Immersion’s free Content Portal app (Android only), that contains links to sample ads. The ads can be run in a mobile web browser, or in apps supporting HTML5, on any Andro…

The 4 principles of great content (or stop dumping garbage on the internet)

The rise of content marketing, the push for real-time engagement and constantly growing competition in digital have led to more and more brands trying to become publishers and content creators. So what do you get when thousands of brands try to mass-produce content on a global scale? A million chicken noodle soup recipes and 600,000 identical ways to remove grass stains.Put differently, you get a content junkyard filled with meaningless and duplicate pieces of garbage.Marketers often forget to ask themselves key questions like, “Do our consumers actually care?” or “Is this content related to our brand?” or “Is anyone really watching/reading/sharing it?”We all know the stats. Every minute of every day, over 400 hours of new YouTube videos are uploaded, over 65,000 photos and videos are uploaded to Instagram — you get the idea.People hunger for content and entertainment, yes. But this has driven brands to become content generators — not creators — and honestly, most of them should not b…

As Facebook Audience Network broadens, what does it mean for your campaigns?

Some of the latest changes for Facebook’s Audience Network give it a legitimate claim of being a chief competitor to Google for both website publishers and advertisers. Early this year, mobile web inventory was added on top of in-app placements, and then more recently, Facebook announced the expansion of Audience Network to include non-Facebook users, along with a move into header bidding. With these developments at the forefront, you can more thoroughly evaluate the impact of Audience Network in comparison to existing Facebook and programmatic campaigns.Facebook is turning the dialPreliminary research (email registration required) I’ve conducted as part of my work at Nanigans helps illustrate how these changes are impacting the larger marketplace. The share of Nanigans customers spending on Audience Network rose to 59 percent in Q3 from 56 percent in Q2 2016. Meanwhile, among advertisers spending on Audience Network through both Q2 and Q3 2016, the share of spend going to the off-Face…
