Why link outreach teams have the most difficult job in the agency

After spending several years in a media agency, I’ve come to the opinion that link outreach teams have the most difficult job in the agency.Imagine telling a programmatic trader that he had to get impressions for a client, but he wasn’t allowed to pay for any of them. Or imagine telling a TV buyer that they had to get some spots based on some “exceptional” creative. Again, no money was allowed to be exchanged. The life of someone in outreach has become very challenging. Long gone are the days of emailing travel, mommy and lifestyle bloggers and slipping them a cheeky $50 payment to publish a link within their content under the guise of merchandising or a guest post.Compliance with Google Webmaster Guidelines is higher than ever, and outreach teams are expected to deliver the same number of links as they were before. They are expected to get influencers to talk about a brand on the strength of some content that the brand alone has. Following are a few of the reasons I think they have th…

Proximity and beacon data now making its way into DSPs for retargeting

When they hear “beacons,” most marketers think of in-store coupons or notifications. Yet retargeting is quickly emerging as a compelling use case for the proximity data and technology.Yext launched one of the first beacon-based, offline-to-online retargeting solutions but later decided to abandon it. Today, Unacast and mobile marketing platform and DSP Juice Mobile are announcing a partnership to provide marketers and brands with proximity data for mobile retargeting and attribution.A number of companies today are using location data for targeting, attribution or retargeting. However, Unacast CEO Thomas Walle says that the difference here is that the data are “deterministic,” very “granular” and available at scale:The data is 100 percent deterministic and we can understand what people have been doing inside stores, in specific departments and interacted with different products. This granularity does [not exist] at Facebook, Google or any other company.Unacast aggregates beacon and oth…

The resurgence of brand marketing in a demand generation world

Over the past several years, B2B CMOs have been earning a seat at the executive table by demonstrating their ability to contribute to revenue and company growth, largely via demand marketing.B2B marketing teams are using data, technology and content to discover, engage, nurture, create and delight customers. What once was a unique and competitive differentiation is now mainstream. The modern demand marketing approach is widely available and used by many B2B marketers. Everybody has the same basic playbook. While the role of brand has never gone away, its importance is being increasingly recognized as a critical piece of a company’s growth strategy. In fact, based on B2B CMO recruiter conversations I’ve had over the last few quarters (strictly for research, of course), CEOs and boards of directors are now seeking marketing executives that have a proven ability to develop a sustained brand position and value propositions that differentiate a company and its solution. In addition, 68 percen…

What’s happening with the cinemagraph?

This, the age of merging media formats, has appropriately given birth to a video-photo.Or, rather, husband and wife fashion photographers Kevin Burke and Jamie Beck did five years ago, presenting the first cinemagraphs in the fall of 2011 at Fashion Week in New York.Using PhotoShop and After Effects, they frame-by-frame composited a photo with a bit of movement that looks like a moment partially frozen in time, wagging some highlighted detail. Initially presented as a gif animation, it is more commonly shown today as a video file because the quality is better. In February of last year, Facebook began promoting their use in that social network as an eye-catching alternative to video. “You’re going to start seeing a ton of these on Facebook,” an ad exec told AdWeek. Flixel has integrated its iOS mobile cinemagraph-creating app into the Facebook Ads Manager, so the moving photos can be created inside Facebook.[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]

Startup Wizer releases AI-based marketing survey platform

Israeli startup Wizer — backed by market researcher Nielsen’s incubator in that country — is launching a new artificial intelligence-powered survey platform. The platform parses various business reports and other sources to assemble background information in specific industry verticals, like ready meals or food/beverages. Currently, the focus is on consumer packaged goods (CPG) and retailers, although new categories can be built.Marketers define goals, and then answer a series of questions. The platform pulls appropriate questions from hundreds pre-written by human researchers, and the questions are auto-assembled, without any writing by the marketer, into an online questionnaire of 25-30 questions. The platform learns about a specific business from the questionnaire’s results and feedback from the business.[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]

A different view on viewability

After reading Google’s report that 56 percent of digital ads marketers paid for never had a prayer of being seen by an actual consumer, one could hear a collective sigh of relief when the Media Rating Council announced a standard for measuring viewability. It wasn’t perfect, but at least advertisers could rest assured that unless 50 percent of their ad was visible in the consumer’s browser for at least one full second, their budgets wouldn’t be hit. Everyone seemed to agree that viewability was a step in the right direction to making digital advertising work better.Has viewability improved advertising? To be fair, it’s had its stumbles coming out of the gate, so let me rephrase the question: Does viewability have the potential to make digital advertising work better? How we got here with viewabilityWhen viewability first hit the scene, people from the ad network and media arbitrage community, along with those of us (me included) who have a history in dealing with large numbers of impres…

Ad fraud: mobile advertising accounts for nearly half of digital spend, but it comes at a price

US Advertisers are spending US $2.6 billion on mobile ads each month, $0.4 billion in the UK, they understandably want to know that their ads are seen by real people, not robots, ideally the people most relevant to their ad message.Advertisers are now investing up to half of their digital advertising revenues – according to the latest stats – in mobile ads. They want/need to know that their money is invested wisely and that the ads they are paying for are seen by real people, not robots, ideally the people most relevant to their ad message.Advertisers need to be able to trust that the various parties that create, manage and deliver etc. their ads have put all measures in place to ensure their ad campaigns deliver maximum return on investment ROI. That is entirely reasonable.Richard Foan, Chairman, JICWEBS (the UK-based Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards) tells ClickZ:“The level of concern among advertisers about click fraud – that includes mobile click fraud – worldwide has no…

OnePlus 3T: Did OnePlus Play a Master Stroke or Did it Blink?

It has been less than a day since it was unveiled and the OnePlus 3T, the successor – and indeed the replacement – of the OnePlus 3 is already making the news. And not based on reviews either – the units have not yet made their way to our offices or to those of many of our colleagues. No, the talk in tech town is already about what the phone represents to OnePlus, and whether it is a masterstroke or a stutter. The very fact that such discussions are taking place reflects how far the company has come in a relatively short span of time (remember, it released the OnePlus One in 2014). It is a period that has been OnePlus not only establish itself as one of the leading players in the “high specs and performance at relatively low prices” segment (we really think a segment like that should exist now), but also, as our colleague pointed out in a recent article, slowly start making its way up towards a slightly more premium segment. The OnePlus 3 did not cost the earth, but it cost just a litt…

How speed affects your site’s performance [infographic]

Site speed is an important factor for SEO and conversion, but do we really understand its impact? There is increased online competition and a decreased attention span that makes it hard for a site to convert visits into sales, or even to increase traffic.Site speed can significantly affect a user’s decision on whether a visit to a page should be prolonged (or repeated) and this cannot be overlooked by any site owner. In fact, a page’s load time affects several key areas:SalesIt’s no surprise that 79% of customers are less likely to buy again from a site that lacks a speed optimised performance. As everything gets faster, you cannot afford to stay still.Mobile experienceMobile experience is highly linked with site speed as this is among the most important factors that affect the length of a visit. 64% of smartphone users expect a page to load in less than four seconds and if your page fails to do so, you might need to optimise it.User experience (UX)Customer experience and mobile experie…

Reliance Jio is Starting Home Delivery of SIM Cards [Exclusive]

Amidst all the hullabaloo surrounding demonetization in India, Reliance Jio had sort of lost the hype surrounding it, not to mention the constant dip in data speeds. Instead of queuing up for the SIM cards, people are now queuing up near banks to withdraw/deposit cash. And it’s the right time for Reliance Jio to start the home delivery of SIM card that they promised a few weeks back.Starting tomorrow, i.e 16th November, Jio is kicking off a campaign across platforms including Facebook where users will be able to sign up for the home delivery of SIM cards. As per the TRAI directive, one person is entitled to hold a maximum of 9 SIM cards. Reliance Jio will let users schedule the time for the home delivery and will send the personnel to complete e-KYC based on Aadhaar. As per our sources, the home delivery of Jio SIM campaign will initially kick off in major metros like Delhi and Mumbai, and will slowly roll out to other cities in India.Developing…© Raju PP for Technology Personalized, 2…

In major measurement update, Facebook overhauls metrics, makes corrections, adds viewability

In a sort of course correction, Facebook made several announcements Wednesday pertaining to audience and ads measurement on the social network. The news includes several metrics corrections — though none likely to cause as much consternation as September’s revelation that Facebook had been overstating the “average duration of video viewed” due to a miscalculation — more third-party verification, a new blog to communicate ongoing metrics changes, and the formation of a new Measurement Council.“We want to reaffirm our commitment to the market and provide clarity and transparency into the platform,” said Mark Rabkin, Facebook VP engineering for ads, by phone yesterday. “We know we have been evolving quickly, which has led to new user behaviors and new ad formats, and we have heard feedback that clients want more information and transparency on the behavior and advertising metrics that are also evolving.“The vast majority of this work has been in progress throughout the year, however once …

Meet Matrix PowerWatch, a Human Powered Smartwatch

Smartwatches sales are rising steadily and so is the adoption. Even high-end luxury watch manufacturers have felt the need to adopt and have already introduced luxury smartwatch range. I have been relying on my Pebble from long and one of the best features has been its exceptional battery life that keeps things going for more than three days even with maxed load. Battery life has been the Achilles heel for the Smartwatches and this was actually one of the prime reason why Android Wear failed to take off as expected.Matrix is a smartwatch on Indiegogo that claims to have solved the battery issue once and for all. The best part of the watch is that there is no need to charge the same as it is powered by you, yes a smartwatch powered by humans. The team behind Matrix have clung to a less known aspect of the human body i.e its power generation capability. The human body generates heat and this heat is converted into usable electric power by making use of the temperature gradient. The work…

How to maximize your AdSense earnings with Amazon CPM ads

If you use AdSense on your blog or website, I’m sure you have looked into other AdSense alternatives to increase your revenue. And in most cases, there are two other alternatives:High quality CPM ad networks such as Conversant Media (formerly ValueClick), Exponential (formerly Tribal Fusion), Technorati, Adtegrity, Advertising.com and moreOther creative ad units such as in-text links, pop-unders, pop-overs, interstitials and more from networks such as RevenueHits, Intellilinks, Clicksor, Chitika and more. However, in most cases, both the above options  possibly didn’t work out for you. Most likely your site was rejected by high-quality CPM ad networks because of their high traffic and unique visitor requirements. And you probably rejected other types of ad units to maintain user experience on your site, or these creative ad units did not pay more than AdSense. Here is a great option to increase your AdSense earnings without sacrificing user experience on your site: Amazon CPM Ads.Here are …

The death of mobile pop-ups and what you can do instead

Over the past couple of years, Google has shown a strong focus on user experience on mobile devices. They have developed their algorithms to address customer experience and usability and to encourage organizations to meet certain standards. For instance, Mobilegeddon looked not only at the responsiveness of a mobile site, but how truly mobile-friendly a site was with photos, font sizes and more. Google AMP pushed an open-source design structure, created by Google to make the user experience on mobile faster and more efficient. The announcement of Google’s latest algorithm, which penalizes sites that use mobile pop-up ads, is consistent with the heart of the changes they’ve been making lately. According to Google’s Webmaster Central Blog, Google plans to make two major changes:In 2014, Google introduced the mobile-friendly label, which indicated that the site being shown in the search results was specifically optimized for mobile. This label was applied to sites where a user was able to …

Make a Bookmark to Quickly Restart Google Chrome

Google Chrome, most would agree, is a memory hog. Open a few website tabs in Chrome and your system slows down to a crawl. The most recommended solution is that you uninstall the non-essential Chrome add-ons and restart your browser to release some RAM.How do you restart Chrome? Close the browser and double-click the application icon on the desktop to launch it again. That’s the usual way but Chrome also offers a special URL that makes it easy to restart Chrome from the address bar.Go to the browser address bar, type chrome://restart and hit the Enter key. Voila! The browser restarts itself.Make a Chrome Restart BookmarkIf you restart Chrome frequently, it may be a good idea to create a bookmark that will help you restart with a click. Here’s how.Press Ctrl+D (Windows) or Cmd+D (Mac) to bookmark this page in your browser. Now click the Edit button on the bookmark screen, put chrome://restart in the URL input field and click save to create the restart bookmark. That’s it. Type chrome://…

Reliance Jio is Readying India’s Cheapest VoLTE smartphone Priced at Rs 1,000

After disrupting the 4G scene in India with Jio, Reliance is prepping yet another budget 4G Jio handset. Earlier this year Reliance had started out with the LYF branded handsets that supported VoLTE and was initially mandatory for getting obtaining a Jio SIM card. The new handset from Reliance Jio is expected to be cost between Rs 1000- Rs 1500 and the device may be powered by Spreadtrum 9820 processor. The new handset will be the most affordable 4G LTE enabled phone if priced within the Rs 1500 price tag. That said the current range of LYF devices start at Rs 2,999 and extends all the way up to Rs 19,999.Mistake not, the new smartphone from Jio will still come with the basic features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and also a fairly large display. Eversince Reliance Jio has commenced its operations the demand for VoLTE 4G devices has doubled up. Counterpoint Research says that 7 out of every 10 smartphones shipped in India is LTE capable. Also, the recent IDC reports indicate that LYF handsets…

Google’s PhotoScan App Helps Digitize Old Photo Prints

Google has debuted, Photoscan a scanner app that is designed to scan your old photographs with the iPhone camera. Until now I made use of Microsoft Office Lens to scan important documents and also old photographs but the Photoscan claims to be a highly optimized app for scanning printed photos in high res. This also reminds me of the flatbed scanner that takes an eternity to scan a photo print not to mention the tangled up cords and the messy drivers. It seems that the time has come when all those old dusty prints in the attic will not only see the light of the day but will also be saved on the cloud.PhotoScan asks the user to take four separate images of the printed photo and then puts them together to create a high-resolution digital copy of the image. Usually if one takes a picture of the printed photos the resulting image is plagued with distortion and glare (especially for the gloss finish). PhotoScan, however, makes use of computational photography to iron out the undesired effe…
