Thirteen things marketers want to know about expanded text ads, direct from Google

Expanded text ads (ETAs) are a big deal. At least a dozen articles on this fine site can attest to that fact (including one that I wrote myself).Spread out across all of the articles and discussions online, I’ve read more than a bit of speculation. So, I decided to get together with the product management team behind expanded text ads to definitively answer some of the most common questions.1. Does anything bad happen if I wait until the last possible moment to upgrade? You’re not directly penalized or anything like that. However, I wouldn’t recommend sitting on your hands.Think about how long you’ve been honing your standard text ads — probably years, right? Early adopters of ETAs have generally said that iterating on successful ads is crucial. The earlier you adopt, the earlier you start learning things.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

Facebook shuts down Atlas ad server because it doesn’t serve ad sales

Facebook’s ad-tech strategy grows ever more insular.Facebook has decided to stop operating its Atlas ad server but continue to run its Atlas measurement tool, the company announced on Friday. As much as the decision was Facebook’s to make — Atlas’s ad server has struggled to attract customers — it shows how centered Facebook’s ad-tech strategy has become around ads sold through Facebook.Atlas’s ad server and measurement tool are sibling products, but only one directly serves Facebook’s ad sales. Advertisers use the ad server to automatically determine which specific ad to place into slots bought without Facebook’s involvement. And they use the measurement tool to evaluate how all the different ads they bought performed, including the ones bought through Facebook, in order to allocate credit and decide where to spend their money going forward. It’s unclear how many advertisers have used the Atlas ad server to date; I’m waiting to hear back from a Facebook spokesperson about that. But th…

Black Friday and beyond: Mobile strategies that keep on giving

With Black Friday and the holiday shopping season around the corner, retailers are hoping for a fourth quarter that’s good to them, delivering sales that fatten their bottom line. They’re also looking for opportunities to acquire new customers and stay engaged with current ones to ultimately convert them to loyal consumers who will continue to boost their top-line revenue for the year ahead and beyond.Fortunately for brick-and-mortar retailers, the key to welcoming shoppers through their doors and accomplishing both is right in the palm of most shoppers’ hands: a mobile device.According to Pew Research, 72 percent of Americans own a smartphone, so it’s no surprise shoppers have come to rely on it heavily. A study by Deloitte Digital found that digital shoppers bring higher store traffic, conversions and spending; with 84 percent of consumers saying they use their phone while shopping in stores, mobile strategies are vital for engaging with shoppers and helping them chart easy-to-navig…

Zapier launches Digest, so its apps can send their messages where you want

Workflow automator Zapier allows a user to link applications, so that, for instance, an email signup in one application gets automatically added to a customer relationship management system. The company has integrated about 750 applications, but the chains of applications you have connected together are still talking to you separately — sending emails, notifications, alerts, and other updates. This week, Zapier is trying to organize that cacophony of messages by launching a Digest by Zapier integrations. It allows you to send messaging, notifications, alerts and summaries from a specific application(s) to one place that you regularly check, like an email or the Slack collaborative messaging platform. Digests — which are text only — can be scheduled for daily, weekly, or monthly intervals, and you can only Digest apps that are in Zapier’s ecosystem.[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]

Hashtags certainly aren’t new on social platforms, but do you really know how to maximise their effectiveness? It’s not easy to apply a hashtag strategy for all social networks, as each one has its own rules. However, you can still analyse what works for each platform and adapt your habits for the future posts.Trackmaven analysed more than 65,000 posts on social media, offering useful insights on how the use of hashtags changes on each platform.Let’s see their impact on the biggest social networks.Facebook: one hashtag can increase the engagementFacebook may not be the most popular platform to use hashtags, but they still seem to increase the audience’s engagement. Amazon has been working to launch their Prime Video service in India for quite some time. Now, a tweet by the company’s CEO reveals that the Amazon is on the verge of introducing their video service globally by the end of December. Color Binoculars app is Microsoft Garage Solution for Assisting the Color Blind

Color Blindness is not something new neither is it a rare occurrence, in fact, 8% of the human race cannot distinguish between the vibrant hues. Also, for most of the people, the color blindness goes undetected and there is nothing much they can do about it. Well, Microsoft’s innovative initiative, Garage has once again proved its mettle with a new app called Color Binoculars. This app aims at helping color blind people distinguish color combinations that they would usually struggle with. Tom Overton, Microsoft software Engineer who is also colorblind says, “Anything with red or green messes me up, It’s not so terrible, but it does affect you. For instance, fall leaves don’t look any different for me than other leaves. They look like they always do. It takes a lot of color out of my life – metaphorically, that is.”Color Binoculars is currently available for iOS and is part of the Microsoft Garage apps. The apps help colorblind people differentiate the color by making the reds brighter …

Photo Scanning the Google App Way… Well, it Just Works!

Google surprised a few people when it announced the Photo Scan app a few days ago. The app is basically designed to well, take better pictures of pictures. In simple English, you use the app to take digital copies of your printed photographs (the ones that came on that wonderful material called “Paper”, remember?) and store them. Preferably on Google Photos.Well, I have been using the app to scan a few of my old pictures and the news is that while the app is not as glitch-free as it claims, it certainly is a massive step ahead of the “just take a picture of the picture” method of image digitization that most of us tend to follow.Let’s get the basics out of the way first – the app is available for free download for Android and iOS devices (iPhone users in India cannot download it, though, at the time of writing). We downloaded the Android version on the Pixel, but the app will work on any Android phone running Android 5.0 and above. I nicked two old prints from my mum’s album for the t…

Vivaldi Gets Light-Changing Update; eMail Client and Mobile Apps Coming in 2017

In a desktop browser world that seems split between Chrome, Internet Explorer (or Edge, in some cases) and Firefox, Icelandic company Vivaldi has been trying to carve a niche for itself with its browser (also called Vivaldi). And well, it certainly does do something that is beyond the ordinary after its latest update, which is scheduled to arrive on November 22. Yes, there are the usual bug fixes and ironing out of rough spots – the Reader View is more accessible, thanks to a button in the address bar, and you can also drag tabs and tab stacks between browser windows. But more significantly, there is an IoT angle to the browser now. Thanks to a tie-up with Philips, users will see the lights in their room change in sync with the sites they are surfing – so if you are on Facebook, get ready for the room to get a blue-ish tint or go all-white when you are on Google (we have not tried it out with TechPP yet – do mail us your experiences if you do). Of course, you will need to have Philips’…
