Putting programmatic video back on the radar

With video expected to feature in 80 percent of consumer internet traffic by 2019, it’s no wonder traditional advertising budgets are being re-prioritized to reflect this. And as the digital video advertising market continues to expand — with double-digit growth expected annually until 2020 — programmatic video has immense potential. The benefit of programmatic video over traditional video ad buying is how it leverages real-time data to get the right video ad in front of the right consumer, at the right time and in the right place. But despite the bright prognosis, there are plenty of challenges to be conquered before it becomes the publishers’ default trading method. Many publishers remain wary of a programmatic approach to selling video inventory due to challenges around delivery and efficiency, and they are reluctant to adopt the technology. So what concerns are preventing publishers from fully embracing programmatic video, and what can be done to put it back on the radar?[Read the f…

The future of paid search buying

What is the future of paid search buying? Will the search engines or bid management platforms release an innovation that transforms how we buy? Will a new player emerge and totally revolutionize the search industry? When we look at the most sophisticated ways to buy, we’ll find some clues about what the future holds.Technically savvy search marketers can be innovative with campaigns above and beyond what bid management platforms (BMPs) provide. They can expertly work in between the BMPs and UIs, using advanced practices such as AdWords scripting. This is great, and we may see more of this in the future. However, the most sophisticated buying is done in a completely algorithmic fashion using in-memory computing systems with active API data transfer. The future of paid search marketing superiority will be determined by the amount of information used to model decision-making scenarios and the ability to purchase and adjust bids in an entirely programmatic way.Yes, you read that correctly:…

Google is pulling Store Visits data into more AdWords reporting to help retailers and brands gain a deeper understanding of how their ads are impacting store foot traffic. The search giant has also shared insights on mobile search trends and store traffic patterns from Black Friday weekend last year. Mobile played a key role in shopping searches leading up to stores opening for Black Friday sales last year. On Thanksgiving day, 59 percent of mobile shopping searches occurred before 6:00 pm when in-store foot traffic started to pickup. For more on the new Store Visits reporting and Google shopping insights, read the full article on Search Engine Land.

As ‘Campaigns of One’ get more personal, are we nearing the point of over-personalization?

“Campaigns of one” are a common refrain today among digital marketers, replacing mass market campaigns with highly pinpointed orchestrations of content, offers, ads, and more directed at individuals. But that pinpoint keeps getting sharper and sharper, driven by a massive influx of new types of data and by increasingly intelligent platforms. At some point, do we reach over-personalization, when the messaging has crossed the line into creepy? And, if so, is there a way to deal with it at scale? There are signs everywhere that over-personalization is approaching. For instance, Cambridge Analytica — the data firm for Donald Trump’s campaign — claims it has created psychological profiles for every adult consumer in the U.S.The Internet of Things is well into being a thing, with sensors and connectivity appearing in appliances, cars, billboards, or inside physical stores, creating the ability to track our movement and preferences throughout the real world. (Whether our identity is stated or i…

Simple steps to addressing your one-time buyer problem

After months of planning your marketing strategy for Black Friday and beyond, the holiday shopping season is finally here in full swing.Breathe a sigh of relief, but don’t get too comfortable — now it’s time to tackle the next challenge: what to do with all of those shiny new holiday shoppers. Some of your new customers might join the ranks of your most loyal shoppers, but without a tailored marketing strategy, you’re likely to end up with a stocking full of folks you’ll never see again. Why do one-time shoppers represent such an opportunity cost to retailers? Take a look at the numbers: Two-time buyers are up to nine times more likely to repeat than first-time shoppers (source: research by my company, Custora). In addition, it will cost you anywhere from two to 25 times more to acquire a new customer than to simply retain an existing one. With those figures in mind, making an investment in your new holiday customers is a tactic that’s sure to pay off into the new year and beyond.Start…

Report: Facebook develops content suppression tool for China reentry

Do no evil. Make the world more open and connected. These have been Google and Facebook’s respective tag lines or mantras, if you will; however their moral and ethical aspirations bump into an uncomfortable and often contradictory foe: the market. While Google has in recent years walked away from “do no evil,” which led to regular charges of hypocrisy, Facebook still actively promotes itself as an agent of positive change around the world. That image was dramatically upended by numerous reports that unchecked, fake news on Facebook may have helped swing the election to Donald Trump. Now the New York Times is reporting that Facebook has “quietly developed a censorship tool” to help the site regain access to China, the world’s largest and most populous internet market. According to the report, the tool would “suppress posts from appearing in people’s news feeds in specific geographic areas.” It also points out that in other countries, such as Russia and Pakistan, Facebook cooperates with …

How to market to developers without causing dis-content

Look at the website of any business selling enterprise services or technology, and I’m certain you’ll find libraries of e-books, white papers and other content for download. Fill out a form that asks for your name and email address to get access to all the PDFs and infographics you’d like.Ideally, you’ve found information that helps you get new insight into a strategic challenge or that provides really practical solutions to an ongoing business need. When done right, that’s content marketing in a nutshell. You’ve traded something valuable (your contact info) for something else valuable (great content). It’s a win-win for you and for the business that published it.Too many times, the outcome isn’t as idealIn fact, I’ll bet you (like me) have had the unfortunate experience of feeling like you just made a Faustian bargain — trading your soul for something that wasn’t quite as worthwhile as you’d imagined. And now you’re hounded relentlessly by Mephistophelean sales reps who don’t seem to …

Apple’s Patent Points at a Clamshell Phone With Foldable Display

It seems like it’s the year 2000 all over again, Apple has patented a flip-phone that needs to be flipped to open. The phone will be an advanced clamshell and will come with a flexible OLED screen on the front that folds in the middle and is held together by a hinge mechanism. In essence, the entire smartphone can be folded into half and tucked in your pockets. It’s a well-known fact that not all patents materialize into products but the companies nevertheless keep building a strong Patent portfolio. Apple was in the news recently for patenting something as silly as a paper bag. Also, patents like this will further strengthen the diversification needs of the company. That said, Apple has never used a curved screen or a flexible screen on any of its products and maybe this patent signals a new technology in the pipeline. The main advantage OLED displays has is that it emits its own light and thus ends up having darker blacks and colors that are more vibrant, also, the power consumption b…

Why I Moved to Simplenote and Probably You Should Too

As I was jotting down notes for a story on Google Keep, I noticed something peculiar – a major part of the file was missing. It was outrageous as the research behind that took a significant amount of time and watching it just disappear was utterly disappointing. I made some searches and ask a bunch of my colleagues to see if there was any issue with everyone and it turns out, Google Keep isn’t particularly impeccable at handling multiple device synchronisations. That is somewhat ironical given it is cross-platform compatible. It was time to move on and after trying out a couple of other applications, I settled for Simplenote. Why Simplenote?Simplenote is everything note-taking apps are supposed to be – they should digitally resemble the experience of a notepad in the most sophisticated way possible. There are no superfluous animations, coloring, and features I don’t necessarily require to feed the information. It’s merely a list of your notes, comes with tagging abilities so that you c…

Travelmate is so Much More Than Just an Autonomous Suitcase

Travelmate is an autonomous suitcase that begs to differ from usual suitcases and promises to be more than just a suitcase. In fact a couple of months ago we had seen a similar autonomous suitcase called Cowabot but by the looks of it seems that Travelmate offers more features than the Cowabot. Travelmate not only moves with ease in either horizontal or vertical position but it also lugs other luggage put on top in horizontal mode. Needless to say, the suitcase comes with an array of sensors and mapping technology that helps it move about in large crowds. The Travelmate is live on Indiegogo and comes in three different sizes. The product showcased for the demo in apparently a fully working prototype and the company requires funds to scale up the operations and start productions. Travelmate follows you wherever you go this means that you can walk hands free without having to lug the suitcase around. Travelmate tracks your position with the help of the companion app. It moves along at sp…

AccessURL Lets you Share Netflix Credentials without Actually Revealing it

One of the best part of Netflix apart from the content is the fact that you can share the subscription with your family and friends. This is something that will bring down your effective subscription fees per person and will make Netflix much more affordable. Netflix subscription is based on the number of screens that will be streamed simultaneously, for instance, the top of the line subscription includes 4 screens at a maximum resolution of UHD. Now sharing the Netflix credentials is not exactly something that most of us will be comfortable with since it can be grossly misused and the chances are that one can be locked out of their own account.Enter AccessURL, this Chrome Extension attempts to solve the problem of credentials sharing by allowing users to share the credentials without actually sharing the password. To start with all you need to do is download the Chrome Extension from the Chrome Web Store. Once installed, open the extension on the Netflix page and choose when you want…

This ‘Prank’ Video has the Potential of Crashing Your iPhone

Just imagine the number of videos you open on your smartphone every day. In most cases, the number are quite large and mostly include a multiple number of near spammy videos circulating on WhatsApp, Hike and chat boxes of other popular messaging apps. Well, what if any of these videos freezes your smartphone and renders it useless? It will definitely be a nightmare none of you would like to think of. That said, a report now reveals that a link to one such video can really crash your spanky new iPhone. The video link in question is apparently sourced from Sina-Weibo, a Chinese social network website. Precisely speaking, the video can be found on Miaopai a video sharing app for the social networking platform. At first glance, this might look like just another video that plays quite normally on the video player on your iPhone, however, it will soon render your device useless. Within minutes of playing the video, your iPhone will start slowing down and would continue to lag. Then, all of a…
