The filter bubble: it won an election and can help you win customers

You are probably like me and don’t want to read another article about marketing lessons from the recent US election, but a number of thoughts coalesced in my head that prompted me to write one more. Since some time has passed, I hope you will bear with me.Let’s start with an idea that is core to our experience living in today’s world:The filter bubbleThe filter bubble is the idea that we are mainly connected to people who think like us. These are our friends and our social media connections. We also follow news sources that reinforce our worldviews and values. And finally, these patterns of behavior even influence our search engine results and social media algorithm-based news feeds.Technology platforms show us things we have a higher propensity to like and click so we spend more time on their platforms. This is one of the reasons half the country was surprised by the election results and the other half wasn’t. Everything they saw online reinforced their support for their preferred ca…

Vistar adds first-party data to out-of-home (OOH) ad targeting through LiveRamp partnership

Step by step, out-of-home (OOH) advertising is becoming just another kind of online inventory. This week, New York City-based Vistar Media expanded its repertoire through a partnership with data provider Acxiom’s onboarding unit, LiveRamp.According to Vistar CEO Michael Provenzano, this is the first use of first-party customer relationship management (CRM) data for targeting and measurement of OOH inventory, and it’s the first time LiveRamp has been involved in OOH.Previously, Vistar has offered a platform for booking OOH media and serving ads to what it says are hundreds of thousands of digital signs in the U.S., covering 90 percent of all place-based digital signage. This includes electronic billboards, bus stop digital signs, elevator signs, taxi screens, screens at airports, and others. It provides automated bidding for digital signage, which can be reached through its own demand-side platform (DSP), similar to how an advertiser or agency might buy website inventory. For non-digital…

How do our biases impact PPC performance?

I’ve come to believe that the essence of PPC management can be boiled down to two things:Never let one thing (keyword research, bid management, A/B testing ad copy and so on) take up so much of your attention that you let something else slip. What you did yesterday probably needs to be changed, and failing to adapt your methodology is as bad as having an empty “Change History” log.As you gain more experience in PPC, you start to develop patterns and favorite tactics out of necessity. We bring tools that worked in the past to each new campaign or ad account. People are paying us for our past experiences and how these experiences translate into future potential. But are the things we believe about PPC the very things holding us back from fully optimizing an account?[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

A still image from a video on the WhatRunsWhere site Santa Monica, California-based Pathmatics allows enterprises to monitor their competitors’ advertising. WhatRunsWhere offers a similar service, but it’s targeted at small-and-medium-sized businesses (SMBs).Today, Pathmatics announced that it has acquired WhatRunsWhere. E-commerce tops $5 billion over weekend, mobile beats $1 billion Black Friday

According to Adobe, Thanksgiving and Black Friday online retail sales exceed $5 billion. More noteworthy in some ways is that mobile devices contributed a record $1.2 billion to that total on Black Friday alone. There was mixed data on in-store traffic and sales with some sources reporting an initial decline vs. last year and others reporting small in-store gains. However on a percentage basis, online shopping far outpaced in-store traffic. While retail analysts and the media focus on the distinctions between online and offline shopping and the particulars and trends associated with specific shopping days: Thanksgiving, vs. Black Friday vs. the horribly named Cyber Monday, consumers just focus on bargains and convenience. Individual shopping days have given way to “Cyberweek” deals, some of which started before Thanksgiving and continue this week. Many “Cyber Monday” promotions began yesterday.Consumers are becoming much more “agnostic” about where they buy. Yet a huge percentage of onl…

AMP’s long game

In just one year, the Accelerated Mobile Pages project went from zero to 700,000 domains creating AMP content, with 600 million AMPs indexed by Google in October 2016.Ten months ago, AMP hadn’t launched in Google search; today, it’s almost impossible to perform a mobile search without getting AMP results. Publishers are reporting up to 15 percent of total mobile traffic going to AMP.  The speed and scale of AMP’s growth is unprecedented for a new web technology.AMP results in Google search Yet in some respects, AMP is still in its adolescence — experiencing a few growing pains and causing some confusion. Some publishers are reporting improved revenue performance from AMP; others report the opposite. There’s also a lingering misconception that AMP is a Google product, which shades the way publishers think about it.Now is the time for a deeper discussion about AMP, to clear up the confusion and unpack the mixed reviews from publishers. It’s time to think about AMP’s broad purpose and pot…

Without data, your marketing strategy won’t cut it in 2017

In the beginning, there was no light, and marketers were forced to rely on “gut feeling” when it came to assessing the success of marketing initiatives. We simply lacked the tools and information needed to scientifically conceive of and measure the effectiveness of our efforts.Even as more effective data analytics tools started to become available, many marketers preferred to trust intuition over the data. Intuition became prized in the C-suite, and taking action based on gut feeling was valued over the hard work of crunching data and formulating rational strategies. As recently as 2002, executive search firm Christian & Timbers found that 45 percent of executives “rely more on instinct than facts and figures to run their businesses,” according to a Harvard Business Review report. That’s a pretty alarming statistic.Unfortunately for marketers driven by creative instinct, today’s businesses are increasing demands for marketing teams to be able to show a tangible ROI to justify their…

What is an exact match domain (EMD) and why does Google want to punish them?

In which we describe what an exact match domain (EMD) looks like, how they can manipulate search rankings and why you should avoid them. What is an exact match domain (EMD)?An EMD is a domain name that precisely matches a search query that will likely drive traffic to your website. For instance, if you call your website BuyCheapJeansOnline.com.The search query ‘buy cheap jeans’ is a lucrative search term, and if you call your website this then you might assume this is a short cut to the top of a search engine results page (SERP).But as you’ll learn, even if this works in the short term, you’ll still want to avoid doing it.What’s the problem with EMDs?First of all, it’s the surest sign of a spammy website if its URL exactly matches a search term. Just think of all those ‘watch movies for free’ websites that proliferate SERPs when you search for that phrase.Even if you remove the word ‘free’ and search for ‘watch movies online’, the SERP is a wild west town full of unsavoury characters.Y…

5 Windows Utilities I Can’t Live Without

I’ve been a faithful Windows user for years. Throughout this lengthy period, Microsoft has come a long way with its desktop operating system – the interface has shifted from dull visuals to a lot more modern aesthetics, it can finally handle touch and traditional desktop applications without messing the navigation, and a whole lot more has been changed. However, for me, some things have remained perpetual primarily in terms of the utilities I use every day on my laptop. Here I discuss, five such software I can’t live without.1. CloverWindows 10’s default file explorer still doesn’t support multiple tabs, you’re stuck with juggling between multiple instances of windows. Thankfully, a free software called “Clover” has been in existence for years. Clover brings Chrome-style tabs to the fundamental file explorer, hence you can work in the same window by firing up numerous tabs concurrently. It even supports settings’ pages, bookmarks, and you get all the quick shortcuts for closing/openin…

Off-page PR: everything you need to know about changes to the local press

The regional press still carries great importance. Wrongly maligned in some quarters, the stats almost speak for themselves. The 1,000 local newspapers and 1,700 associated websites across the UK attract a whopping 97 million users every month. Studies show that regional news outlets are the most trusted and attract the most effective response to adverts too.Yet let’s not beat around the bush, the regional press is also facing up to huge challenges. The fall of classified advertising and the growth of online news – free and convenient to access – has resulted in a dangerous drop in revenues and a significant fall in the number of people reading print editions.Big titles have seen the number of people paying for a copy halve in less than a decade. Large publishers such as Johnston Press no longer report their sales figures and many choose to focus on their total audience. Those twin pressures have led to some pretty drastic action. If you’ve got an interest in journalism then feel free to…

Recently, the smartphone duo was imported to India for research purposes and was spotted on import listing site Zauba. Now, a report from China reveals some details regarding the internals of the two devices. The Samsung Galaxy C5 Pro and C7 Pro will apparently be the enhanced version of the Galaxy C5 and the C7 smartphone that were launched in China earlier this year. Just in case you are unaware, the Galaxy C series is the company’s latest range of device that aims to carve a niche for itself in the mid-range segment which is currently dominated by the Galaxy A and Galaxy J Series devices. That said, it’s worth noting that the none of the C series devices has made its way out of China and it is expected that the Galaxy C5 Pro and C7 Pro too will debut first in that country itself.Initial reports revealed few details regarding the specs sheet of the up…

Leaked Pictures Show off the Nubia Bezel-less Slider Phone in the Making

Bezel-less phones seem to be in vogue, thanks to the Xiaomi Mi Mix which started out as a concept phone and later materialized into a production ready handset that anyone (in China) can buy. Needless to say, the Bezel-less phones look fluidic and are a cosmetic delight. Xiaomi Mi Mix has been received well by the tech fraternity and this seems to have prompted Nubia to ready its own Bezel-less phone. The alleged Nubia bezel-less phone has been leaked via a bunch of pictures. The device is bezel-less and it apparently also comes with a sliding mechanism, something that we have seen in phones back in mid-2000’s. That said it is still not crystal clear on how this sliding mechanism works but the images show how the screen can be slid down to reveal the front facing camera along with the flash. It is speculated that one can assign other functions to the slider including answering calls or starting a timer. Also, the rear panel is said to be customizable and will be made out of either metal…
