Is Google’s AMP carousel working? (Or, SEO insights from Kanye West)

Google’s AMP rich cards look like they shouldwork. The format is visually appealing, and AMP rich card carousels usually appear at the top of mobile search results, dominating the first viewport. They also provide a brand showcase publishers should love.AMP “Top Stories” scrolling rich card carousel in Google mobile search But recently, publishers have been scratching their heads over analytics indicating AMP content has a lower click-through rate from rich cards than from general search results. They’re finding this data in Google Search Console (GSC), which now allows publishers tofilter AMP performance in searchbased on appearance as rich cards in a carousel vs. non-rich text links. Here’s the GSC dashboard for an aggregated group of news publishers, showing an average CTR of 3.14 percent for AMP rich results vs. 4.39 percent for AMP non-rich results, even though the rich results have a higher average position.Google Search Console rich vs. non-rich performance for an aggregated group…

LinkedIn Ads: CPC vs. CPM bidding — Stop saying, ‘It depends on your goals’

While consulting with companies on their LinkedIn advertising initiatives, I routinely get asked, “How should I bid? CPM or CPC?”I very quickly noticed that my response is very different from “conventional wisdom.” When I hear others asked this question, I repeatedly hear, “It depends on your goals.”These misguided souls go on to explain, “If your goal is brand awareness, bid for impressions (CPM). If your goal is direct response, bid for clicks (CPC).”Not only is this a gross oversimplification of a rule of thumb, but I’d argue it’s flat-out wrong.Although the examples I provide here will be related to LinkedIn Ads, it’s important to note that these same principles apply regardless of the platform you use.Why it’s wrongIt doesn’t matter what your goals are; your job is to generate impression/traffic/leads/sales at lower costs and higher volumes.Even if you’re only concerned with exposure, wouldn’t you want to get that exposure for the lowest cost? Along the same vein, if you’re conce…

Going viral: The top social media marketing columns of 2016

Social media has the power to change the very fabric of our society, and nowhere was that more evident than with this year’s presidential election — with its wild proliferation of fake news and with candidates trading political barbs on Facebook and Twitter. But now that the election is in the rearview mirror, it’s time to take a look at the social media trends that reigned in 2016 and how marketers reacted to them. It’s no surprise that Facebook dominated our columnists’ headlines this year; with over 1.18 billion daily active users, it’s hard to tune out the social media megabeast. Our columnists looked at the Facebook trends and strategies that mattered the most to our readers, from managing negative postings on the social network to using Facebook’s Audience Network. But while Facebook continued to be king for marketers this year, other social channels were still top of mind. Our readers were keen to learn more about everything from Yelp tips for business owners to creative best pra…

Ad-Vantage: the Best and Worst Tech Ads of 2016

2016 has been a roller coaster ride when it comes to tech advertising. There were some great ups and some exceptional lows as well. We have seen some of the really good advertising this year and well, some ads which were not quite up to the mark. So, as we come to the end of the year, here is a list of our favorite and not so favorite tech ads of 2016.(Note: this list is based on ads that were aired in India, as that is the country we are based in)The AD-elicious ones: Seven ads we lovedVodafone Supernet “Be a Superdad” Although the 4G hype was created by Airtel with those annoying Internet speed test ads and the Airtel Girl, there is one player which advertised 4G like a total boss. India’s second largest telecom service provider, Vodafone has time and again given us some amazing ads and speaking for myself, the company has been among my favorites in terms of advertising. After Airtel came out with those very direct, in your face, fastest network ads, Vodafone very cleverly took over …

Control your Android Phone from Desktop Through Voice Commands [Chromeville]

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could talk to your computer and command it to send a text from your phone or push the current browser tab or grab a screenshot straight from your phone without you even lifting a finger? Yes, it would, and that’s not a difficult task to achieve anymore thanks to a Google Chrome extension simply called “Join”.Join essentially lets you remotely control any Android or any Chrome OS device through voice commands and is quite intuitive. And the best part? This one actually works. The setup process is also surprisingly straightforward; you install the extension and the Android app and you’re good to go.Join can be triggered via any custom phrase, by default, it is “computer!” and I didn’t bother to modify that because it sounds like I’m living in the future. Although, I did try “Jarvis” but Join didn’t seem to work that well with that. Once you have configured everything, you can execute various actions on your gadgets such as ring them remotely, grab a shot of wh…

Amazon Patent Reveals Plan to Use Floating Airship Warehouses for Drone Deliveries

Amazon has been working closely to revolutionize the process of product delivery using unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs in short. Jeff Bezos led e-commerce firm has in fact, openly talked about their ambitious plan of delivering goods via drones. Now, an unearthed patent filed with US Patent Office reveals details regarding Amazon’s grand plan to make use of floating airships carrying fleets of automated drones. The patent described as “airborne fulfillment centers” shows Amazon’s big picture plan wherein the floating airships would function as airborne warehouses. These airships would hover over various cities at an altitude of 45,000 feet. Apart from stocking goods, the airships would also be housing fleet of drones for delivering the delivery products. So far, it seems that the drones carrying the products would be dropped with gravity from such altitudes and thereafter its motor would kick-in only after it reaches a certain height. On successful delivery of the product to the destin…

Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra Review: The Mighty Multimedia Slab

In terms of phone sizes, 2016 was definitely a bit of a mixed bag. While on the one hand, we had the likes of the Galaxy S7, the Xiaomi Mi 5, the Google Pixel and of course, the iPhone 7 to prove to the world that a phone did not have to be colossal to grab market share, the year also saw some really large devices, most notably Xiaomi’s Mi Max and Lenovo’s Phab series of phones, and even as the year drew to a close, Asus threw another massive device into the mix – the Zenfone 3 Ultra. And well, it is easily the largest high-profile device we have seen this year. Yes, it is actually bigger and heavier than the device we had called The Hulk, the Xiaomi Mi Max. Whereas the Mi Max was 173.1 mm long, 88.3 mm wide and tipped the scales at 203 grams, the Zenfone 3 Ultra is 186.4 mm long, 93.9 mm wide and weighs a “healthier” (as per Indian standards, where more is better), 233 grams. Yes, seen from the dimensions perspective, this is a biggie all right. You can call the Zenfone 3 Ultra many t…
