Budweiser Super Bowl LI ad tells immigrant story of founder coming to America from Germany

Budweiser has released the 60-second spot it will air during the Super Bowl, an ad that tells the story of how its founder Adolphus Busch immigrated from Germany to America in pursuit of his dream to brew beer. The Budweiser spot is reminiscent of a Miramax period film, with dark lighting and award-level character costumes and make-up. The ad titled “Born the Hard Way” opens with the line, “You don’t look like you’re from around here.”In light of today’s political climate, it would appear Budweiser is using its 60-seconds during the Super Bowl to make a statement – putting a spotlight on how its founder came to St. Louis, Missouri as an immigrant, “…in pursuit of the American dream.” Created by the Budweiser’s agency Anomaly, this will be the brand’s 101st Super Bowl commercial. Anheuser-Busch, Budweiser’s parent company, says it has bought, at least, three full minutes of Super Bowl ad time this year to be shared among four of its brands: Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob ULTRA and Busch.…

How martech has made ABM-at-scale possible

Account-Based Marketing (ABM) isn’t a new thing. The idea that B2B salespeople target a few key corporate accounts — using spears instead of marketing’s widely-cast nets, as some have metaphorized — has been around for a while. What is relatively new is the ability to do this at scale, intelligently and automatically. When the definitive history of marketing technology is written, the creation of this army of spears will be one of its most important consequences.Major marketing platform Marketo, for instance, added ABM to its resume in 2013 when it bought Insightera. From Marketo’s website:“Because ABM requires more account-level personalization than traditional marketing it has historically cost more to implement. However, advances in marketing technology have enabled marketers to employ ABM for much less than previously possible and at much greater scale.”In part because of the tech tools available, ABM is now common. A 2016 report from SiriusDecisions on the “State of ABM,” for insta…

Sizmek’s dynamically-assembled ad serving now includes audience segments from DMPs

Sizmek provides a Programmatic Creative ad serving solution, where ads are assembled on-the-fly so that their design and content can be better tailored to specific audiences. This week, the Austin, Texas-based company is launching a new Data Hub that integrates with data management platforms (DMPs) for the first time. This means that Sizmek customers can now target these dynamically-assembled ads by DMP-delivered audience segments, which can be enhanced by previous ad history.A segment of users who have previously visited sports content or sites, for instance, might be shown a different ad from a maker of trucks if they’ve been previously served an ad from that manufacturer, possibly creating a story sequence of several ads. Both the DMP-based audience segment and the use of ad history are new to Sizmek.[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]

Facebook opens its ad network’s video ads to independent viewability checks

After a series of measurement errors disclosed last year, marketers’ distrust of Facebook’s math grew, as did their calls for more independent audits. Now the social network is enlisting more outside help to make sure advertisers can count on their Facebook ad counts.Facebook is adding more ways for advertisers to independently check if their ads had a chance of being seen — including when those ads are sent outside of Facebook — and if the ads were shown to the right people. For the first time, Facebook is opening up its third-party ad network, Audience Network, to outside viewability verification. Measurement firms ComScore and Integral Ad Science will be able to check if brands’ ads had an adequate chance of being seen when shown on the non-Facebook sites and apps in the ad network.Facebook touts its ads within Audience Network as well as on Facebook and Instagram as being highly viewable in conversations with ad buyers; its sales reps have even claimed Facebook’s ads are almost 100…

Motorola ushered in the era of Mods with the Moto Z and ever since then we have been witnessing a generous bunch of Moto Mods that bring across an additional layer of utility. Starting from the Hasselblad to the Projector, the mods have been pretty effective in offering the additional features. Called the “Ultimate Moto Z Mod” the new shell style tries to invent on the utilitarian front and offers Wireless charging and IR Blaster. Chip and Charge: The Qualcomm-Apple Fracas

Qualcomm is one of the best-known names in the mobile phone industry. The company’s Snapdragon line of chipsets has now become the equivalent of “Intel Inside” for smartphones. Considering the fact that SoC (System on Chip) plays a very important role in smartphones, Qualcomm’s influence amongst component makers far outweighs everyone else’s. The Snapdragon 810 might have been a disaster but the company has made up for it in the form of Snapdragon 820 and is soon scheduled to launch the Snapdragon 835. So it all seems Jolly Good for Qualcomm, right?Er…not quite. For, while 2016 might have been a pretty good year for Qualcomm but 2017 has started on a bad note with the company facing accusations of indulging in anti-competitive activities from FTC, KFTC and Apple. Sounds complex? Let me try and provide a clearer picture of what’s happening with Qualcomm and why.More than just chips: Qualcomm’s business modelLet’s begin with a brief overview of Qualcomm’s business model. Tech firms join forces to push back on Trump immigration ban

Stunned by the White House’s anti-immigration and travel ban, a group of major tech companies is planning on submitting a “friend of the court” brief in one or more of the lawsuits that have been filed against the Trump executive order issued Saturday. The tech group will meet today in California to discuss strategy according to a Reuters report. This follows the lead of Microsoft, Amazon and Expedia, which are supporting the Washington Attorney General, who filed suit against the immigration ban on Monday. Amazon is also apparently reaching out to members of Congress to explore legislative options. The Silicon Valley meeting was reportedly initiated by GitHub and will include Google, Netflix, Kickstarter, Airbnb, Netflix, Box and AdRoll. Numerous other companies have been invited but Reuters was unable to confirm their attendance. Among them are Pinterest, Yelp, Salesforce, Evernote, Etsy, Dropbox, Adobe, Mozilla, Zynga and others. Before the ban was announced, last week, Square introdu…

A better Siri is critical to the iPhone’s long-term competitiveness

When Apple bought Siri in 2010 it ushered in the era of the virtual assistant. It was a truly differentiated feature vs. Android phones.Over time, however, the lead that Apple had has been lost. Google, Microsoft, Amazon and others introduced virtual assistants that now equal or exceed Siri’s capabilities. And Amazon Echo has a significant head start in the home.Voice search and virtual assistants have become mainstream in the past two years. No longer are they novelty features of the user experience; they have become core to it. Rising usage has been followed by rising expectations. Thus a less competitive assistant, over time, becomes a potential liability for Apple’s main revenue source: the iPhoneApple will announce earnings later this afternoon. The company is widely expected to report $77.4 billion in revenue and 76 million iPhones sold during the holiday quarter. Both numbers would be improvements vs. a year ago. The company has seen three consecutive quarters of year-over-year…

Employees vs Celebs: The Tech Brand Ambassador Debate

It might have recently lost its high-profile global vice-president, but Xiaomi has forged a reputation for being unconventional and unorthodox in the Indian smartphone market. And thanks to its success (we hear the Redmi Note 4 has sold a quarter of a million units in ten minutes even as we write this), ever since the brand arrived in India, there has been a constant debate between those that prefer conventional ways of marketing and the ones that like the Xiaomi-approach.When it entered India, Xiaomi was perhaps the first brand ever to sell its products only online and through a flash sale model, with absolutely zero advertising at that point in “traditional” media. No matter the odds against this succeeding (and the criticism from many quarters), it did prove that the not-so-mainstream ways can also work – it is now one of the top smartphone brands in the Indian market, well ahead of the likes of Sony, LG and HTC.Although we have seen various companies adopting similar models since,…
