Alexa, can you acquire new customers for marketers?

The family of Amazon Alexa devices. “Alexa, order ketchup.”“Okay. Would you like me to re-order Heinz –““Sure.”“– or would you like to try Hunt’s?”“Huh?”The first part of the above conversation is a reality today. Internet-connected voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa offer a hands-free way to buy things without any need for browsing. The second part of the conversation is a fantasy for marketers and one that could be something of a nightmare if it never becomes reality. If it’s so easy to re-order the products you already buy without even browsing other options, how likely are you to try a new brand?Amazon’s Alexa has been the breakout star of this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, an annual showcase of technology’s latest trends. Alexa was initially limited to Amazon’s Echo line of smart speakers, but device makers like Lenovo, LG and Whirlpool announced at CES that they are embedding Alexa into their own speakers, refrigerators and washing machines, creating an opportunity to tethe…

7 key components to a winning mobile marketing budget in 2017

Now that 2017 is here, it’s time to start planning your mobile strategy for the year.If you think mobile success is about landing pages and app install ads, I have some news for you: In 2017, your mobile marketing strategy will have to include a lot more than just an advertising plan for your app. No, it won’t inflate your mobile marketing budget — it’ll just make it a lot more effective.1. Product road mapThe strategic product road map must include the development and incorporation of marketing-related features in the app itself, but not only that. An effective onboarding strategy is required for user retention and engagement, as is a push notification strategy that connects with your users at the perfect time, with the right content. In addition, features like social media sharing integration, deep linking schemes, in-app measurement and tracking of user behavior and engagement — all demand that your mobile marketing strategy and product development plans go hand-in-hand.2. Entrepreneurial lessons from an amateur poker player

Shortly after I sold my first company, a friend took me to the poker tables at a casino in Florida. I had never played the game before, so my friend gave me a quick tutorial before we bought chips and sat down at one of the amateur tables. My loss was swift and absolute: in less than an hour, I lost five hands and was out $200.Even though that outing had been a failure, I was intrigued by poker. There appeared to be lessons in it for me, especially as a startup entrepreneur. It seemed to seamlessly blend knowledge, experience and chance. When I returned home to Israel, I joined a weekly, low-stakes game. I also started reading widely about the game. And a little over a year later, I put my autodidactic education to the test. I returned to the poker tables, this time in Las Vegas, and, over the course of a weekend — roughly 16 hours of playing — I made $3,000. Not exactly enough to quit my day job, but not bad for a guy who, a year earlier, didn’t know the first thing about the game. But…

This Wearable Helps Provide Drug-Free Relief for Nausea and Motion Sickness

Reliefband Technologies, an American startup company showcased a unique wearable at the CES 2017. By the looks of it, the Reliefband Neurowave looks like just another fitness tracker. But then, it functions in quite a different way. Instead of tracking footsteps or sleep quality, the band helps offer relief to people suffering from nausea and motion sickness. With the prevalence of VR and the exponential growth it is receiving, some of the drawbacks of the technology is cropping up. One of them is referred to as motion sickness. This type of motion sickness is specifically associated with prolonged use of VR headsets, and is quite different from what people may face while travelling via boat, aeroplane etc. The motion sickness from VR takes place due to the conflicting information that are being sent to the brain by your eyes and ears. As a result of this, your brain gets confused to believe that you have ingested poison by mistake and tries to throw it out of the body by initiating th…

First Impressions: Honor 6X – Safe Design, Camera Promise

It has attracted a lot of attention at CES because of its attempt to offer dual cameras at a relatively affordable price. And is now headed for Indian shores, trying to revolutionize how we look at the cameras in mid-range smartphones. To what extent it succeeds will be known only in our final review, but here’s our initial take on the Honor 6X.“Two phones slapped together”We had complained about the relative uniformity and lack of innovation in smartphone design in the mid-range price segment in recent times. Well, while the Honor 6X comes with a few new design elements here and there, sadly there is hardly anything striking when it comes to the build of the smartphone. We received the gold variant of the Honor 6X which sports a white front and gold back. These two parts of the device seemed like parts of two different phones slapped together and which are not gelling along well – the sides are part white and part gold, with a clear band between them which stresses the difference. So…

Amazon made 10x more money than any other e-commerce site during 2016 holidays [Slice data]

Amazon already told the world that the 2016 holidays were its “best-ever season,” and new data from retail analytics company Slice Intelligence is adding some perspective to the claim.Based on a panel of more than 1.3 million US online shoppers, Amazon claimed 38 percent of all online revenue during the just-completed holidays. That’s a slight gain over its 37.9 percent share during the 2015 holidays. But it’s also another sign of the company’s ownership of US e-commerce dollars. According to Slice’s panel, Best Buy was again the No. 2 e-commerce site during the holidays, but with only 3.9 percent of all online revenue, it earned about one-tenth of what Amazon earned. This eye-opening chart shows how big Amazon’s lead is over the rest of the top ten e-commerce sites.Apple saw the biggest year-over-year growth, going from 1.7 percent in 2015 to 2.4 percent last year. Walmart, Macy’s, Nordstrom and J. Crew all saw small declines in e-commerce revenue share.Online sales were up 20 percent…

5 Things To Practice To Become A Great Blog Writer

It’s a new year, so let’s go ahead and make a New Year’s resolution right now:I promise to write every day.It doesn’t have to be much. But it has to be something.Something. Anything. It can be a journal entry. (See The Five-Minute Journal.)It can be a blog post.It can be a 750 word free-write.It can be an avant-garde poem about a wilting flower. It doesn’t matter. But you need to write… every day. This is how you master the craft of writing.Nobody just sits down and stares at a blank page (or screen) and in 30 minutes comes up with the next great piece of literature. That doesn’t happen. In order to master your craft, you need to practice that craft. And in order to practice that craft, you need to:Maintain a discipline. What your discipline looks like is surely different than what my discipline looks like, but the important thing is that you stay consistent. You need to consistently stay disciplined every single day.In case you’re wondering what my discipline looks like, here’s a piece I wr…

AOL introduces BrandBuilder, a suite of goal-based ad programs and new ad formats

AOL introduced a suite of new ad format programs under the umbrella name BrandBuilder at CES in Las Vegas on Thursday. The new programs — Director, Buyer and Beta — included in BrandBuilder serve as the starting point for advertisers based on their campaign goals. The Director program includes a variety of formats aimed at building brand awareness, while the Buyer program is aimed at driving direct response actions such as clicks to shop, see store locations or email signups. Rather than cherry picking through AOL’s entire catalog of supported ad formats, advertisers start the buying process by selecting one of the programs. The formats in Director and Buyer can include mobile, video, rich media, desktop and can run across AOL publishers, including TechCrunch, Engadget, Autoblog, Kanvas, MAKERS, HuffPost RYOT,  and Moviefone.. The purpose is to simplify how brands & advertisers buy and serve ad experiences.Beta is a kind of incubator program for brands to collaborate with AOL on new…

A comprehensive guide to SSL certificates

A full range of SSL products are available on the market today that cater to various domain and security needs. Though many webmasters are exploring the possibilities, hoping a move to SSL will boost their search rankings, it can be overwhelming to try to compare these options, let alone fully understand what you’re paying for. Many SSL providers offer a wealth of add-ons, which makes comparing providers relatively difficult. This guide will help answer several common questions so that you can find the certificate that best suits your needs:What type of SSL certificate should I purchase?Should I use a free certificate or purchase one from a vendor?Which certificate is best for securing a sub-domain? Multiple domains? How much warranty coverage do I need? How do I troubleshoot common installation problems? What is an SSL certificate? Before we tackle those questions, let’s cover the basics. SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, a security method which allows for the encryption of data when b…

Taboola adds Commerce Sciences as part of its evolution ‘from widget to platform’

Taboola content recommendations at the bottom of a publisher’s web page. Content recommendation service Taboola is today announcing that it has purchased site personalization and optimization platform Commerce Sciences, and will make its capabilities available for free to Taboola’s customers.Backers of the optimization service, which was launched in 2012 by ex-Israeli Intelligence alumni, include Alphabet/Google Chairman CEO Eric Schmidt’s Innovation Endeavors. Commerce Sciences will discontinue its current free-standing offering, and its employees, based in Tel Aviv, will move to Taboola’s offices in that city. Deal terms were not made public.Taboola founder/CEO Adam Singolda told me that this acquisition in the third step in the evolution of his company from “a widget to a platform,” so that it can offer site improvement tools to publishers in the “open web” — that is, outside of the giants Google and Facebook. The previous two steps, he said, were the inclusion in the Taboola dashboa…

Marketing automation for the little guy is helping to power the new economy

The internet, coupled with mobile devices, has provided a fulcrum for an escalating number of aspiring entrepreneurs to start their own businesses. Because of these technical advances, entrepreneurs offering everything from outdoor landscaping to speech writing can represent themselves in a cost-effective way.In fact, over 33 percent of the entire American workforce is involved in some type of freelance work, according to an in-depth report by Spera (registration required) undertaken last year. Either they’ve been laid off, they are an expert, or they are looking for additional income. To be a success as a freelancer or entrepreneur in this environment, a laser focus on creating the best possible product or service and getting it to market are a must. Marketing and business expert Seth Godin cautions that the focus must be on shipping the product or service rather than on listening to others or waffling on the administrative details (like marketing) of running the business. But to whom …
