2017: The age of social satellites

When I started building content marketing programs in 2010, it was easy to get more web traffic. You targeted a keyword, hammered out two or three articles a day with those keywords littered throughout an otherwise forgettable block of text, and people came. Google surfaced anything with the right keywords. People found it.By 2012, quality content was what got results. At an email marketing company, my team built a robust content program with the blog as the machine’s engine. The more articles we wrote, the more traffic we got. In one year, we saw an 800 percent growth in traffic. Our goal was to build a blog that had so much helpful knowledge that our customers kept coming back for more. It worked.Today, the idea seems quaint. Every business is attempting content marketing now. Social channels are saturated. User engagementis falling. And that’s why 2017 is going to be the year of the social satellite. The social duopolyThe best way to gauge how consumers are engaging with content today…

A bot for Kia Motors is the first to debut a new Super Bowl ad

Bots are growing up. This week, one of their kind becomes the first to premiere a Super Bowl ad.The 60 second ad — a whirlwind comic spot starring Melissa McCarthy for Kia’s new Niro crossover SUV — is now available through the company’s NiroBot on Facebook Messenger. Kia COO and EVP Michael Sprague said in a statement that the bot milestone “reinforces the idea that our newest crossover is like nothing consumers have ever seen before,” backing the idea that the fuel-efficient Niro “sets a new standard in the market.”[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]

[Tech Humor] Genie, Get Me a Phone!

The geek had no idea what the bottle contained. It had been a long night though – one in which he had spent hours trying to explain to a client why cookies on a website were not called biscuits – and he was seeking spiritual peace. He hoped the contents of the bottle were alcoholic – that was the sort of spirituality he needed at the moment. He picked up the bottle. Opened it.And sure enough, out came a spirit. But not of the alcoholic type. This was something that looked like the product of an all too hasty mating between a large potato and an unwashed sack, and it seemed to float in the air, had a distinctly vaporous appearance, and a sense of dress that was definitely more BC than Versace. He (we assume it was a “he” because of a profusion of facial fungus on either cheek, a moustache, and a voice that sounded like Robin Williams) was, in short, a genie.“Thank you for freeing me from that urology lab bottle, my friend,” he boomed at the geek. “I am an all-powerful genie and I will…”…

Does dwell time really matter for SEO?

What’s the real impact of machine learning on SEO? This has been one of the biggest debates within SEO over the last year. Please note, this article was originally published on the Wordstream blog; it is reprinted with permission.I won’t lie: I’ve become a bit obsessed with machine learning. My theory is that RankBrain and/or other machine learning elements within Google’s core algorithm are increasingly rewarding pages with high user engagement.Basically, Google wants to find unicorns – pages that have extraordinary user engagement metrics like organic search click-through rate (CTR), dwell time, bounce rate, and conversion rate – and reward that content with higher organic search rankings.Happier, more engaged users means better search results, right? So, essentially, machine learning is Google’s Unicorn Detector.Machine Learning & Click-Through RateMany SEO experts and influencers have said that it’s totally impossible to find any evidence of Google RankBrain in the wild. That’s r…

Satechi USB-C Power Meter is Here to Help you Weed out Counterfeit USB Type-C Cables

USB Type-C is around from quite some time and yes just like other accessories out there if you use a wrong one you may end up causing severe damage to your device. For instance, MacBook Pro costs a lot but a single instance of bad USB Type-C can probably damage your device and render it useless. In fact this was one of the reasons that forced Google Engineer Benson Leung to classify different Type-C USB cables as safe or unsafe.Buying third party Type-C cables is indeed a herculean task as most of the times one may end up paying for a counterfeit one. The problem here is that one simply can’t distinguish between a fake cable and a genuine one apart from referring to the cosmetic cues. All of this has lead Satechi, a San Diego-based company to come up with a Type-C Power Meter. Priced at $30 the meter looks like a wearable with its small OLED display and when plugged in it will show the direction of the power draw and also other details including that of voltage, amps and the amount of…

Three paid social features you need to try in 2017

tanuha2001 / Shutterstock.com Hopefully, your social advertising program has been able to hit the ground running in 2017. Now that you’ve determined your budgets, goals and targeting for the new year, it’s time to try out some shiny new social ad features. The three that I would personally recommend testing in Q1 include updated features to Facebook Dynamic Ads, Pinterest’s addition of Promoted App Pins and Snapchat’s first- and third-party audiences. In this post, I’ll go into details of each to explain why you should consider testing them.Facebook Dynamic Ads audience updateDynamic Product Ads on Facebook launched about two years ago and have proven to be a powerful retargeting ad product for e-commerce and retail advertisers.Since that time, advanced features have been added, and advertisers in verticals outside of retail have leveraged the DPA functionality as well. Now Facebook has brands buzzing about a new audience update that functions in a capacity akin to acquisition targeting…

Facebook Wants you to Befriend Strangers With new “Discover People” Feature

Facebook is apparently testing out a new feature that will allow users to meet strangers. Called “Discover People” the feature will prompt the users to update their profile and then display a list of events along with details on who might be going. The feature will also group people with similar interests or other similarities like working in the same organization. In a nutshell, Facebook is encouraging people with similar interests to connect with each other thus enabling a new channel of communications. Well, unlike Tinder the feature can also be used beyond dating and perhaps one can also use it for leveraging connections and getting a job.One can check out the feature by heading over to new section which asks your introduction and lets you update the same. The feature walks you through various sections like features photos and only once all of this is done you will be able to see the “Discover People” section. Tucked below the option is Upcoming Events which shows the people plann…

Why Microsoft’s Windows 10 Cloud OS Makes Perfect Sense

PCs are in a difficult place right now. On one hand, they are being segregated in a wide range of form factors, and on the other, their revenue, as well as sales, have been drastically declining as advanced components continue to elongate their lives. The situation is even more befouled for Microsoft who is struggling to widespread Windows 10. The new MacBook Pro’s poor reception has certainly helped, however, it’s still utterly impossible to lure in loyal Mac users. Therefore, there’s not a whole lot of room for PC makers currently to work with.Furthermore, tablets and Chromebooks have gotten substantially better over the last year, and customers have actually begun to consider them while looking for their next computer. These underestimated categories of computing devices have been aggressively snatching Windows’ share under Microsoft’s nose. Everything put together, it’s not difficult to understand why PC sales have been plummeting for five straight years. So, is there any way for M…
