How mobile marketers can prepare for when tragedy strikes

chrisdorney / Am I glad that 2016 is over. From David Bowie to Carrie Fisher and George Michael, the year was full of tragic news of the losses of our childhood and teen heroes.Tragedies such as celebrity deaths should by no means be considered branding opportunities, but there are times when brands’ plans are affected by the events and they need to pivot quickly. Marketers need to be able to schedule a campaign — and just as importantly, unschedule a campaign — at a moment’s notice. Mobile app owners, in particular, need to ensure that their app doesn’t lag behind other channels.Looking at the hopefully brighter horizon of 2017, we digital marketers need to make sure we develop the ability to respond quickly to unexpected events, the death of our heroes being an extreme, but all-too-common, example last year. How quickly can you schedule a campaign in your app?The first question to ask is: Am I capable of scheduling campaigns at a moment’s notice? Let’s say something b…

IBM’s Watson joins H&R Block to explain taxes to humans

IBM’s logo for Watson IBM’s Watson — the supercomputer that refuses to be pigeon-holed — is now donning a green eyeshade. That’s because he is setting up shop for the first time as a tax expert, a result of a new partnership announced recently between his parent company and H&R Block, the tax preparation company that essentially invented that industry more than sixty years ago. As a result, the cloud-based Watson will be visually presenting tax issues to as many as 11 million clients who visit H&R Block’s 12,000 offices, while he is also looking over the shoulder of the tax preparers to offer advice. His new occupation will be highlighted in a commercial that will be shown in the first quarter of this Sunday’s Super Bowl, since his name adds a marketing advantage to any intellectually-challenging endeavor.[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]

Living with Microsoft Edge [Tech Xperiment]

Tech Xperiment is a new web series on TechPP where we will be extensively using a new (or updated version of) software/app for a week or two in place of the default, well-known alternative. We start the series with Microsoft Edge, the built-in web browser on Windows 10 which is trying its best to shrug off the baggage of its infamous predecessor, the Internet Explorer. It’s been about two years since Microsoft ditched its legendary Internet Explorer in favor of a more modern and proficient browser, Edge. And throughout this lengthy skirmish, Microsoft annexed a series of features in order to compete with market leaders such as Chrome, Firefox and Opera. However, they’re still anchored at a mediocre 5% of internet users despite Windows 10’s rapid adoption by over 400 Million people. Although the major reason behind that is the fallacious image it has, as otherwise, it’s still an astonishingly lightweight as well as capable platform and should suffice most users’ needs.Hence, to know how…

But do those justify a price of around Rs 28,000?Looks more from Cupertino than from ChinaWe said it in our initial impressions that the Vivo V5 Plus wants to be an iPhone when it comes to design. And it manages to pull that off! We used the phone for close to two weeks and there were over half a dozen occasions when we had people thinking asking us if that was an iPhone. This, in spite of scores of iPhone clones …
