Amazon undercuts Walmart’s free shipping minimum — dropping order amount to $25

Julie Clopper / Shutterstock.com Amazon and Walmart’s battle over who has the lowest minimum order amount for free shipping hit another milestone this week, when Amazon undercut Walmart by $10 — dropping its minimum to $25.In February, Amazon dropped its free shipping minimum to $35 to match Walmart, but now, the e-commerce giant is going even lower, offering free shipping for non-Prime members on all orders of $25 or more (on eligible items). The drop was spotted yesterday by BestBlackFriday.com on Amazon’s shipping options page:“While we are not sure of the exact date that the new shipping minimum went into effect, we can tell you that it was sometime in the past week. According to Archive.org, Amazon still had the $35 minimum in effect as of May 2,” reports BestBlackFriday.com.Walmart took the first shot back in January when it began offering free two-day shipping on orders of $35 or more. At the time, Amazon’s free shipping minimum for non-Prime members was set at $49. In February, …

Capturing ‘made in the USA’ searches: Strategies for building awareness and sales

Since making the commitment in 2014 to purchase goods made in the in US whenever possible, I’ve watched and learned how companies build awareness and market their products. In fact, I love this stuff! I follow companies on Twitter, read their About pages and watch their videos, and even study their packaging. (Strategic use of packaging is a great way to connect with your customers pre- and post-purchase — but that’s another article.)In last month’s column, I covered PPC and SEO strategies for capturing “Made in the USA” searches. In part two of this three-part series, I cover how to build awareness — and sales — of your company’s US-made products through PR, link building, content marketing and social media engagement.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

3 tactics we’re using for Answer Boxes

“Position 0” is the new holy grail in organic search rankings. A normal position 1 ranking is great and all, but I’ll take an answer box that features my content (sometimes with an image) over position 1 in almost all cases.Just take a look at how attention-grabbing an answer box (also known as a “featured snippet”) is:With some of our own clients, we’ve seen click-through rates increase by as much as three times when one of their URLs that already ranks on page one suddenly gets an answer box.Once this started happening organically, it was like a drug — and we wanted more. So we set out to determine how we could get answer boxes for more queries.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

7 steps to help you prepare for a marketing cloud/email service provider transition

When making a move to a new provider of cloud or email services, the number one consideration is to leave yourself enough time to administer the procurement process and create an orderly transition. For large companies, a migration tends to include several interconnected dependencies and systems. Too many times we see request for proposals without enough consideration for when the existing contract is up — or no RFP at all. This puts everybody in a bad position. You, the client, are likely coming up on a contract expiration that is immovable. The time of 30-, 60- or 90-day extensions seems to be in the past.If you’re planning to make a move, you must be ready to leave your existing platform behind on the day your contract ends.In general terms, you should allow at least eight months to prepare for and implement this transition. For some, it will be even longer. For others, it may be shorter. Following are the key components.[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]

Wendy’s gives #NuggsForCarter a year of free nuggets for getting the most retweets ever

Last month, 16-year old Carter Wilkerson from Reno, Nevada, tweeted Wendy’s, asking how many retweets it would take to win a year’s worth of free nuggets. The restaurant’s response: 18 million.Wilkerson accepted the challenge — and while he hasn’t been retweeted 18 million times yet, the Wendy’s fan now holds the record for the most retweeted tweet of all time with 3.42 million retweets. The tweet has garnered much attention for Wendy’s — earning engagement from celebrities and brands alike. Microsoft, Amazon and Google, among others, all used their Twitter feeds to help Wilkerson reach his goal.In honor of earning the most retweets ever, Wendy’s reconsidered the 18-million number it first tweeted, and the company has given Wilkerson a gift card for one year’s worth of free nuggets, in addition to donating $100,000 to the Dave Thomas Foundation in Wilkerson’s name.HELP ME PLEASE. Snapchat copies Instagram’s Boomerang with looping snaps

Now it’s Snapchat’s turn to do the copying. On Tuesday, Snapchat rolled out its version of Instagram’s Boomerang feature that plays videos in a loop. Instagram was far from the originator of short, looping videos — see: animated GIFs, cinemagraphs, Vine videos and so on — but its Boomerang has popularized the use of looping videos to the point that, like Snapchat’s Stories product, it has become an important feature for any video-sharing app to adopt, even Snapchat.Snapchat users can now set the video snaps that they post to Stories or send privately to friends to play on repeat until a viewer taps to the next snap. Unlike Instagram’s Boomerang, which limits the original video’s length to one second, on Snapchat, the original video can be up to 10 seconds long. And, unlike Boomerangs appearing in Instagram Stories, looping videos appearing in Snapchat Stories will stay on the screen until a viewer taps past it.People can also now set the photos included in Stories or sent in chats to s…

Three ways to put your valuable email data to work

Email has been a part of our lives for so long that most of us take it for granted. But take a closer look the next time your inbox pings. Marketers are always at work transforming email in new and interesting ways to engage the consumer.I was reminded of this on a recent trip to Las Vegas, when I stayed at the Venetian. The morning I left, I received an email saying that all I needed to do to check out was click a button in the email message to initiate the process. I was pleasantly surprised because it was clear that the hotel valued my time by seamlessly integrating the checkout process into the regular flow of my life.Email is older than social media and messaging apps, but don’t underestimate its power. Eighty percent of marketing leaders cite email marketing as core to their business, according to the 2016 Salesforce State of Marketing Research Report. Good campaigns elevate the experience so that you’re excited at that ding of new mail.Go beyond simply acquiring email addresses…

Pinterest’s object-recognizing Lens feature now scans QR codes, too

Holy #@!%$, QR codes are a thing again.Snapchat’s spin on the QR code has popularized the bar code’s ugly offspring to the point that Facebook’s Messenger, Kik, Spotify and others have adopted their own versions. Now Pinterest is making its in-app, object-recognizing Lens feature able to scan QR codes. Because apparently, in 2017, being able to scan clothes and furniture isn’t cool enough.Laughable as QR codes are have always been, Pinterest extending Lens to QR codes is a serious move. The second-biggest problem with QR codes — the first being that they’re an eyesore — is that, while brands could put them anywhere, people usually had to download special apps to scan them. Maybe Pinterest can fix that.Pinterest doesn’t break out its mobile user numbers, but more than likely a solid chunk of the 175 million people that use Pinterest every month access the search-slash-social platform via its mobile app. So now maybe marketers stand a better chance of people scanning the QR codes on the…

Social shopping: How to use social media analytics to quantify purchase intent

tanuha2001 / Shutterstock.com Marketers today have advanced technologies at their fingertips to gain a deeper understanding of their potential customers. They use keyword performance metrics to learn how customers are finding them and attribution modeling to follow customers’ paths to conversions. But tracking what happens before the customer ever clicks your ad or visits your website to make a purchase is still a mystery to many marketers. Most consumers — myself included — do not go straight to a brand’s website when evaluating a big purchase. We do research, online and offline. We may go to the store to try out the product, ask for friends’ recommendations or read product reviews. And millions of consumers are talking about each step of their shopping experience on social channels. This is why social media analysis is necessary for brands to quantify purchase intent.Below are three ways to gauge purchase intent through social media analytics.1. Understand your product category and buy…

Amazon introduces ‘Echo Show,’ a new Alexa device with a screen that can make calls

As previously reported by The Wall Street Journal and others, Amazon is introducing a touchscreen Alexa-powered device, which significantly changes the market for digital assistant devices. It costs $229 and will be available on June 28.It’s essentially a 7-inch Amazon Fire tablet with Alexa and a good set of speakers. Amazon is offering $100 off if people buy two.A new feature, the Show, enables users to make calls “to family and friends who have an Echo or the Alexa App.” It will also stream video and music. And it promises better sound. While music is playing, it shows song lyrics on the screen.A video on the Amazon site shows a wide range of use cases, including watching how-to videos on YouTube, making video calls, and using it as a baby monitor. The ability to make calls, albeit limited right now, is a significant development, along with the screen. The Cortana-powered Harmon Kardon speaker will also make calls using Skype. What this means is that consumers will eventually be able…

Up close with Facebook’s Frame Studio

Facebook’s new Frame Studio tool allows anyone to make frames that can be superimposed on top of pictures taken with the Facebook camera or on profile pictures. It’s an interesting new marketing channel, though it has some limitations. Here’s how it works.Frames are better perhaps thought of as filters, a concept familiar to users of Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. With the first two, filters have been a way to give images a visual effect, such as a “warm” effect or the “Hudson” look. With Snapchat, they’ve been a way to quickly add text and visual elements, such as the name of a city you’re in or the logo of a company that has sponsored a filter.Facebook frames are like those Snapchat offers, the key difference being that they’re free and potentially reach a wider audience. That’s a significant new promotional opportunity for marketers.Using the Frame Studio toolYou start by visiting Facebook’s “Camera Effects Platform” page, which covers the two types of filter tools it offers: Fra…

3 logical myths about rankings that can destroy a business

I was scratching my head trying to decide what to write about this month. Lately, I’ve been writing pieces that focused pretty heavily on technical SEO — from my technical argument for quality content a few months ago to last month’s two-part series discussing two recently granted Google patents on how they learn to influence user behavior and guided buying systems with a focus on paid search results. While I’m obviously a big fan of the tech side of SEO, I thought perhaps it was time to write something a bit more approachable. My head-scratching ended when I got an email from a potential client in the high tech sector, and within it was a simple and fairly logical assumption that can (and likely would) have dire consequences if not corrected. This led me to today’s article topic: three logical myths about rankings that can destroy a business.I’m going to begin this piece with the myth that inspired it.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]
