Google updates YouTube creator guidelines for ad-friendly content

Following on its commitment in March to review and beef up policies for ad-supported content, YouTube rolled out updated guidelines that include new focus on hateful and incendiary content. In the aftermath of advertisers pulling out of YouTube after The Times of London reported many examples of brand ads showing up on extremist and violent content, Google was quick to try to regain advertiser confidence. Channels are no longer eligible for advertising until they reach 10,000 views, and search ads remain paused, for example. As a result, many creators have seen their ad revenue plummet or fluctuate significantly. In a blog post Thursday, Ariel Bardin, VP of product management, said advertisers have been coming back to YouTube but acknowledged the past few months have been tough for some creators. “We know that revenue fluctuations have been unsettling and want to reassure you that we’re working closely with our advertising partners to make sure that YouTube continues to be a great place…

Beyond the martech stack: It takes an orchestra to solve the customer experience

If you look at what many vendors are saying these days, it’s all about customer experience. Adobe, Salesforce and Sprinklr, for instance, have redefined their identities in that direction. But reorientation is not enough, according to IDC. Consider a vision of “Customer Experience Orchestration Services” that extend beyond the marketing department, articulated in an IDC study earlier this year from analysts Gerald Murray and Maureen Fleming:Customer experience (CX) is simply unmanageable at most large companies. Traditional approaches to organizational design and technology deployment based on big corporate functions such as marketing, sales, fulfillment, services, contact center, or fill in the blank result in an inherently fragmented customer experience. Marketing doesn’t know how finance interacts with customers, and services doesn’t know what sales has said. Customers have to retell their stories as they move through these different points of contact.Murray and Fleming outline two …

A tale of two cake smashes: How to choose between live and recorded video

Video is growing as a medium for marketers, with 63 percent planning to increase their video budgets for 2017, according to a survey from Brite Content. And given predictions that video traffic will become 82 percent of all internet traffic by 2020, I applaud these plans. But with the choice between live and prerecorded video both sitting out there for brands, retailers and publishers, there’s a lot to consider before diving in.As marketers, it’s now common to weigh the same pros and cons for live or recorded. We want to make a live announcement, but what are the variables we must take into consideration? What are the benefits of planning and scripting (and filming) in advance for a prerecorded video instead? What type of time/cost savings could we experience with live? And what sort of audience would we be reaching with one video format versus the other? The cake challengeRecently, our company, Brandlive, conducted an experiment. We shot a product walk-through demo and set up a challeng…

Not your father’s billboards: Interactive out-of-home is coming of age

It’s not just that billboards — those static and fading printed signs along highways — have evolved into digital displays within an increasingly programmatic ad ecosystem. It’s that they — and their digital display cousins in city squares, bus stops, airports and elsewhere —  have turned into an interactive platform.A new project from National Geographic and Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) is the latest sign.On Endangered Species Day (May 19), several digital billboards in New York City’s Times Square participated in a one-hour event where members of the public could take a selfie with an image of an endangered animal (displayed as photos at street level) and then post it to the hashtag #SaveTogether on Twitter and Instagram. Using a moderation system, the event organizers then selected 175 selfies for projection on the participating billboards (see image above).SONY DSC The animal images were supplied by Nat Geo’s Photo Ark project, which seeks to document all the spe…

In Massachusetts, retailers’ cookies will soon lead to sales tax

A cookie is a kind of property in a location. That statement, if maintained, could usher in a sea change in how online retailers tax users. On July 1, the state of Massachusetts will begin enforcing a new directive from its Department of Revenue. It says online retailers must charge the state’s sales tax to customers in the state, if the retailers deposit or utilize a cookie — or a mobile app — on its customers’ machines.Cookies, of course, are small text files that act as markers, letting a retailer know, for instance, that you looked at blue pants the last time you were on the site so it can personalize content the next time — even if you don’t log in.Generally speaking, online retailers have not had to charge sales tax to their out-of-state customers, a pricing advantage compared to physical retailers in the 45 states that have sales tax. Federal rules say that retailers only have to charge sales tax if they have a physical presence in the state, such as a brick-and-mortar branch or …
