On Prime Day, see how competitors are piggybacking on Amazon’s success

Opportunity, thy name is Prime Day.That’s how some in the e-commerce industry see Amazon’s annual summer shopping event, which this year began last night and lasts 30 hours.Since it began in 2015, Prime Day has driven record sales for Amazon. One estimate last year said Amazon owned 74 percent of all US e-commerce on Prime Day. But that other 26 percent is still a big slice of retail pie, and many other e-commerce players are trying to piggyback on what you could call the “Prime Day effect” — an increase in e-commerce activity that extends beyond Amazon itself. Many of Amazon’s top e-commerce competitors (a list we recently reported from Slice Intelligence’s 2017 Q1 online sales market share data) are running their own special sales this week to coincide with Prime Day. And many big e-retailers not in Slice’s top 10 are following suit. Here’s a look at what some of Amazon’s biggest competitors are doing — or not doing — in response to Prime Day.Best BuyBest Buy’s home page is advertisi…

Social media pages for store locations have 5x the engagement of brand pages [Report]

Until comparatively recently, most multilocation brands and enterprises didn’t maintain separate corporate and individual store location pages on social media. There was a single national brand account, and social posts were typically generated from that account. All that has started to change, however, with more enterprises creating local pages. It’s making a significant difference in engagement. Presence and social media management platform MomentFeed did an analysis of aggregated customer data from “more than 50 clients from October 2016 through April 2017.” In each case, the brand had a national account on one or more of the major social platforms (i.e., Facebook, Instragram, Twitter); it also had individual store or restaurant location pages.Focus of consumer social media engagementSource: MomentFeed customer data (2017)MomentFeed reported that “an astonishing 84.8 percent of all consumer impressions happen on assets that represent individual stores, showrooms and restaurants. Facebook expands test to show News Feed-like ads in Messenger globally

Facebook announced its beta for ads in Messenger is expanding to all markets, meaning the big ads can pop in the message feeds of the app’s 1.2 billion monthly users as of Wednesday. The test, which first launched in Australia and Thailand, features ads that can link to the advertiser’s website or open up a Messenger conversation. The ads look like a typical News Feed ads with a headline, description copy, image and calls to action. They appear on the Messenger home tab feed and are labeled “Sponsored.” The example below from Original Coast Clothing links straight to its website.Ads that link to Messenger conversations can connect to advertisers’ chatbots. This format can also be used to complement click to Messenger ad campaigns, which link to Messenger from Facebook and Instagram. Advertisers can also use the original in-Messenger ad format, sponsored messages, to reach users who previously connected with a company on Messenger.A few things to noteFacebook Messenger ads are:accessible …

News media seek to wield antritrust law in negotiations with Google, Facebook

In the wake of the EU’s recent $2.7 billion dollar fine of Google, the US news media are seeking to both change and wield antitrust law in negotiating with Google and Facebook, which dominate online advertising. Two pieces in the The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal illustrate the strategy. As Jim Rutenberg writes in the Times, the News Media Alliance, representing roughly 2,000 news organizations, is seeking to negotiate collectively with Google and Facebook over advertising and revenue. Rutenberg points out that there will need to be specific Congressional action (an antitrust exemption) to enable this collective bargaining to happen.A News Media Alliance press release acknowledges this and lays out the rationale:Antitrust laws are intended to address the injury inflicted by dominant monopolistic companies. Yet when it comes to the media, existing laws are having the unintended consequence of preventing news organizations from working together to negotiate better deals that…

Amazon Prime Day drives Prime memberships and Amazon commerce lock-in

Jeramey Lende / Shutterstock.com Amazon Prime Day is in full swing. Among the standout deals are those on the Echo and Dot smart speakers, which will advance Amazon’s already large lead in the smart speaker/virtual assistant market. But beyond selling stuff, Amazon’s ultimate objective with Prime Day is to drive more Prime memberships. In order to access Prime Day deals, you’ve got to be a Prime Member. According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), as of the end of June, there are an estimated 85 million US Prime members. That’s up from an estimated 63 million in June 2016 and just over 40 million two years ago.Source: CIRP (July 2017)According to a Walker Sands “Future of Retail Survey” more than half (55 percent) of US consumers have used Amazon Prime in the past year. That’s extrapolated from consumer survey data (n=1,622) and suggests about 137 million Prime members (unless people are borrowing accounts), which is likely too high an estimate.Nonetheless, it indicates …

Martech 2017: The four biggest trends so far this year

The biggest problem with year-end reviews is that, at least in marketing technology, a year can be a lifetime. So, to give you a head start on digesting this year of turmoil, here’s a half-time review of this year’s biggest trends. As of midsummer, I see four big buckets of trends-in-progress: Intelligence, Transparency, The Experience and Going Beyond Computers.IntelligenceNot only is every tool and platform getting way smarter, it’s almost at the point where this new level of smartness isn’t news anymore.Almost every self-respecting vendor is adding artificial intelligence (AI) to its resume these days, largely built around machine learning’s pattern recognition and predictive analytics’ projection of those patterns into the future.IBM’s Watson is one of the AI implementations that is extending that smartness into advanced cognition in an increasingly wider sphere of implementations for the “Jeopardy” winner. Just in recent months, for instance, he’s tackled such tasks as intelligent…

3 ways for marketers to get more from their content

Every new ad unit introduced to the market faces the same challenge: convincing advertisers to invest the time and energy to adopt something different. Google once had to persuade buyers that text ads were worth the effort; Snapchat is today trying to do the same for vertical video. And right now, branded content is at an inflection point: There’s consensus that branded content is effective, but advertisers face trials in scaling it.Today’s top advertisers are producing exciting branded content, too — pieces increasingly on par with the premium editorial content that surrounds it. And advertisers want their best content to be seen by as many folks as possible. While 2017 has been called the year for native, advertisers may sometimes feel that their best creative isn’t being given a chance to perform to its full potential. But the best branded content is often the hardest to access, done via site-direct executions, exclusive to publishers and their audiences. On the other hand, publisher…
