When SEO isn’t your SEO problem

If you’ve been doing SEO for any length of time, you’ve undoubtedly experienced your fair share of failures. And in many cases, frustratingly, the SEO program itself was not the issue. While I’ve discussed meta topics such as management challenges, getting executive buy-in, and the need for flexibility in the past, I haven’t directly addressed the question, “What do you do if SEO isn’t your SEO problem?”As search marketers, we work our tails off analyzing data, search results, client websites and more, with the goal of providing recommendations that will move the needle. Unfortunately, the best recommendations in the world don’t matter if they aren’t implemented — and therein lies one of the biggest challenges of SEO.Let’s look at a few common obstacles that can hinder an SEO program’s progress and discuss how we can overcome them.t ensures your recommendations are applied and the program can move forward.[Read the full article on Search Engine Land.]

Google’s all-new, quite counterintuitive guide to ad testing

Over 2 1/2 years ago, I wrote about how ad rotation works in AdWords. Since then, a whole lot has changed. Most recently, we’ve simplified the options for ad rotation. Let’s take a closer look at how ad rotation works now and what that means for ad testing. How AdWords picks which ads to showThe goal of ad-serving in AdWords is to deliver a tailored message that meets a searcher’s needs. This means delivering ads that people want to click on and getting better results for your business. In the new world of ad rotation, things are pretty straightforward. You have two options:Optimize: Prefer best-performing ads.Do not optimize: Rotate ads indefinitely. When you don’t optimize and rotate your ads indefinitely, the system will rotate ads from the ad group to choose which one enters the auction. If it’s that ad’s turn, then it’ll enter into whatever auction is happening at the time. A worse-performing ad will get its turn in that auction as long as you leave that ad running.Optimized rotatio…

How I raised $55 million without a pitch deck

As I settled into a conference room at a large fund, the executive assistant asked if I needed help connecting my laptop for displaying on the TV. “No, thank you,” I said. I wasn’t going to use my laptop. The assistant looked uncomfortable. I was there for a pitch meeting with the partner. And a pitch meeting meant a pitch deck. Didn’t it?Not in my case.If not a pitch deck, then what? That awkward moment repeated when the partner and an associate entered the conference room. The associate asked about a pitch deck; I said I didn’t have one. “I always prefer to do this as a conversation,” I said. That made the associate visibly uncomfortable.“So, you don’t have anything to show us?” the partner said.“I didn’t say that,” I said. With that, I dropped a dated-looking manila envelope containing samples of our product on the conference table. “What’s in that envelope has more revenue potential than AdWords,” I said. “Let’s have a conversation about it.”They smirked, but that didn’t bother me. I …

Reddit is ready for advertisers, but are advertisers ready for Reddit?

Chris Tuff has not yet had a client advertise on Reddit. But he came close. Once.As executive VP and director of partnerships and content marketing at 22squared, Tuff had a client intrigued enough in the platform that the brand commissioned his agency to craft a campaign to run on Reddit. But draft after draft, the campaign’s initial concept weakened. That often happens with any campaign running anywhere, but the risk is higher when running that campaign on Reddit.“With that watering down, we got way too close to being susceptible to the backlash [from Reddit’s audience, commonly called ‘Redditors’]. You’ve got to be very careful. We’re not going to touch that unless we’re pretty certain that this is something Redditors will embrace,” said Tuff.Tuff’s is far from an isolated example of Reddit’s reputation for scaring off advertisers. Executives at four different major holding company agencies declined to be interviewed for this article because the platform has not gained much adoption…

Nine times out of ten, a person will journey down a sales funnel prior to becoming a customer.Whereas in the past you could count on single touchpoint, bottom of the funnel marketing strategies, it’s now increasingly necessary to push consumers down the buying funnel by creating omni-channel strategies.Mapping content to buying stages can help you maximize the benefit of your omni-channel strategies. From awareness of your brand or business via social media, to influencer recommendations, all customers generally need incentives to purchase. Snapchat’s new Promoted Stories format gives advertisers their own slot in the app’s Stories tab

Snapchat has a new Story to sell advertisers. On Friday, Snapchat unveiled its latest ad format called Promoted Stories, which inserts a branded Story in the mobile app’s Stories tab among the organic Stories from the accounts a person follows, the original Shows that Snapchat licenses, the Our Stories it curates and the Publisher Stories that media companies produce for Snapchat. The Promoted Stories format is something of a hybrid of Snapchat’s organic Stories and Snap Ads. As the name implies, it is a paid-for version of a regular Story, though there are limits on how many Snaps a Promoted Story can carry. Advertisers are required to include at least three Snaps, but no more than 10, in a Promoted Story. Like a regular Story, a Promoted Story will automatically transition from one Snap to the next. Each Snap included in a Promoted Story is effectively a Snap Ad. Brands can add attachments to each snap in a Promoted Story so that people can swipe up to visit a brand’s site, check out …
