Influential launches IBM Watson-powered platform to analyze a brand’s social audience

It’s not every day that one of my past stories played a role in the story I’m writing. But that’s the case here. In 2015, while working for another publication, I wrote a story about a startup influencer company landing its first major investment through a matchmaker funding site. That story, Influential CEO and co-founder Ryan Detert told me this week, attracted the attention of someone at IBM, who called to see if there was interest in working with the computing giant’s new Watson supercomputer. There was, and they did, becoming the first — and, so far, the only — influencer network to employ Watson’s multitalented intelligence.Which brings us to the current story.[Read the full article on MarTech Today.]

Three SEO issues that your SEO report needs to include (but you probably overlook)

Good SEO reporting is tough. There’s so much conflicting and outdated advice in our industry that in many cases, SEOs tend to focus on buzz terms rather than good actionable advice.I’ve seen hundreds of SEO reports throughout the years and I often have hard time walking out with a good plan of further action when it comes to making a website better optimized. But it’s not the point of this article. What I’d like to start here is an open-ended discussion: Which SEO issues do you include in your SEO audits that others don’t?Inspired by some recent SEO audits, here are three important SEO issues that I notice are often overlooked:1. Trailing slash / No trailing slashOne of the most under-estimated issues with structuring URLs is double-checking whether your URLs work with and without a trailing slash at the end.Read my old article on the issue which, despite being published all the way back in 2009, still holds true.To summarize:The best practice is to have both versions work properlyGoog…

How to Make Pixel Paintings with Google Spreadsheets

You are using Google Spreadsheets for budgeting and project management but did you know that the same sheets application can help you create impressive pixel paintings in minutes? The Google blog recently published a story of two illustrators who created a bright and beautiful wall mural using Google Spreadsheets.Marina and Mallory connected on Google Hangouts to plan and sketch out ideas, and creatively “hack” Sheets in order to make art: resizing cells into thousands of pixel-like squares, merging cells to create color blocks, creating vibrant color gradients with conditional formatting and cell values, and other cool things we had no idea you could do with Sheets. The idea is simple. Each cell in the spreadsheet corresponds to a pixel in the painting. You compute the color of the pixel and make it the background color of the corresponding cell. Now resize the spreadsheet cells in small perfect squares and your spreadsheet will look exactly like the original artwork. How to Paint with…

Retailers with shopping apps now see majority of e-commerce sales from mobile

For many retailers, mobile traffic equals or exceeds desktop traffic. Now, according to Criteo’s latest commerce report (Q4 2017), mobile sales represent the majority of total e-commerce for retailers with successful shopping apps.Retailers that have both mobile sites and apps are seeing, on average, two-thirds of their online sales coming from mobile devices, according to the report. In the chart below, black is desktop sales, orange is mobile web and yellow is app-based sales. As you might expect, conversion rates on mobile apps are higher, roughly 3x greater than on the mobile web. This may be because the user experience is better in apps, including the checkout process. But it may also partly be because those who download and use retail apps are more loyal and inclined to buy from those retailers in the first place. Those most mobile commerce transactions happen within apps, Criteo said that more than a quarter (26 percent) of all desktop transactions were preceded by a mobile click…

Twitter takes aggressive steps to curb spam & bot activity by blocking identical actions across multiple accounts

Twitter made substantial changes today that will greatly impact social media managers who oversee multiple accounts and use automation apps to manage their Twitter activity. The site announced it is no longer permitting identical — or even substantially similar — content to be simultaneously posted from multiple accounts. It is also eliminating the ability for a user to simultaneously “Like” or “Retweet” a post or “Follow” an account from multiple accounts. This means that users of automation platforms like TweetDeck can no longer select multiple accounts to automate posts, tweets, retweets, likes or follows. The steps are part of Twitter’s ongoing battle to reduce the amount of spam and bot activity currently taking place on the site.“One of the most common spam violations we see is the use of multiple accounts and the Twitter developer platform to attempt to artificially amplify or inflate the prominence of certain Tweets,” writes Yoel Roth on the Twitter blog.Yoel writes that these ch…

Measuring real-world foot traffic results from 3 quick-service restaurant campaigns

Over the course of 2017, three advertising campaigns in the restaurant industry caught our attention. Only one was a strategically created campaign, with the other two originating as social media events that were completely unplanned by the companies involved. To get a sense of how events like this drive store visits, we set out to evaluate if these campaigns resulted in winning traffic from competitors. (The data used here was sourced from opted-in location-sharing mobile devices; it was aggregated into anonymized audience segments and contained no personally identifiable information.)We looked at three separate events from Chick-fil-A, Wendy’s and McDonald’s, comparing their share of foot traffic against each other and competitors Subway, Burger King, Moe’s, Taco Bell, Arby’s, Qdoba and Chipotle.Chick-fil-A’s free breakfast campaignFor the month of September, Chick-fil-A’s mobile app users could get a free breakfast if they ordered one of three items through its “One: app to pick up …
