Square opens platform to third-party developers to create new payment experiences

SMPTE’s new TAXI Complete could make multiscreen ads and content commonplace

CIMM’s visualization of TAXI Complete SMPTE, the standards body for entertainment technology, has issued two new standards that can support online content and ads synchronized between multiple screens.Additionally, the new standards could make it much easier for marketers to track where their programs or ads appear, either on TV, over-the-top (OTT) TV, websites, apps or elsewhere. The new standards, issued earlier this month, are called TAXI Complete (a free white paper is available, but registration is required), and its advocates are touting it as the UPC (Universal Product Code, the ubiquitous bar code on virtually every physical product) for tracking video across platforms. It takes two existing tracking identifiers — Ad-ID for ads and EIDR (Entertainment Identifier Registry) for program content — and specifies how they can become part of the audio track of any video program or video ad. One standard identifies the ad or program, and one identifies where the ad or program is shown.[R…

Facebook launches playable ads, tests retention optimization for app advertising

Facebook playable ads are among the new advertising features for gaming advertisers. Facebook announced new advertising offerings for app marketers at the giant ChinaJoy gaming conference on Friday. After coming out of the gate first with app install ads in 2012, Facebook recently has lagged behind Google and others in developing ad products and features specifically for app marketers. The announcements Fridays prioritize long term value over sheer download volume, putting it on more equal footing with competitors.Playable ads — the ads users can demo from within the ad — are now available globally in the Facebook News Feed. Advertisers can set these ads up in the Facebook UI after selecting the app install campaign objective. Advertisers can also use one of Facebook’s developer partners — Bidalgo, CrossInstall, ConsumerAcquisition, CyberAgent, Kaizen, Kenshoo, MakeMeReach, Nanigans, Septeni Original, Smartly.io, Soft-World, TreSensa and Wisebirds — to help create and manage playable a…

Report: Smartphone shipments down globally, Huawei pushes Apple to #3 position

International Data Corporation (IDC) reported that Q2 smartphone shipments were down just under 2 percent annually. According to the tracking firm, “the drop marks the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year declines for the global smartphone market.”The report also asserts that China’s Huawei has overtaken Apple as the world’s second-largest phone maker by market share. Indeed, China manufacturers dominate, taking three out of the top five spots (or four, if one considers the iPhone is made in China). Also noteworthy, Samsung remains the global smartphone leader despite a 10 percent decline in unit shipments year over year. The S9 phone was a sales disappointment for the Korean giant. IDC also said that Xiaomi is gaining on Samsung or ahead in key markets such as India.Huawei, the new number two, is considered a security risk by many Western governments. The company (along with telecoms equipment maker ZTE) has been accused of helping perform surveillance for the Chinese governmen…
