Hitchhiker’s guide to the end of the third-party cookie as we know it

Google’s planned cross-site tracking changes for Chrome are far from earth-shattering, and with a few safety checks, you should be good to go. Let’s take a look at what Google has planned and what folks in the ad tech and martech world need to do:How Google Chrome’s privacy update affects ad techAs of this month, Google has implemented a new secure-by-default model for cookies, enabled by a new cookie classification system. This system will stop sending third-party cookies in cross-site requests unless the cookies are secure and flagged through SameSite, which is meant to prevent the browser from sending the cookie along with cross-site requests. While SameSite is not a particularly new concept, this will be the first time a secure cookie flag will be a requirement for those using Chrome — not just a best practice, as it has been up until now.Google implemented these new requirements with Chrome 80 on February 4 as the first step in a larger multi-year plan to phase out support for thir…

MarTech Minute: Airtable’s student release, Adobe’s uptime message

THEY HAVE A PLAN. Adobe sent a note to customers of its platforms yesterday saying the COVID-19 pandemic has not disrupted its platforms and said it has disaster plans in place to maintain uptime for automation platform Marketo Engage and its commerce platform Magento. The company said it had planned to launch a version for students, but the pandemic caused it to accelerate the release. Why we care. Airtable is one of the hottest movers in martech right …

Coronavirus has rightfully pulled the plug on the 2020 conference circuit, and while some are touting virtual replacements as a sales and marketing salvation, in reality, there is no single replacement for real-world events. This is the time to embrace integration, create comprehensive, compelling and even longer-lasting campaigns that surpass single executions and reach audiences at a new scale.A hard reset on objectivesThe cancellation of conferences worldwide is your opportunity to reassess. Rather than looking for a direct replacement, ask yourself: Were you exhibiting out of habit, or was there a real, tangible and measurable outcome of our conference participation? All too often, regular routines of roadshows and roundtables become just that – regular. Smart marketers should focus on outcomes, rather than the outputs, and ask if those things are even possible in the world of webinars alone, or desirable when the audience is third-party and rented rather than ownedEvery company, c…
